Activity House Concept

The original conceptual sketches.

The concept of an activity house was originally inspired by the realization that an enlarged two-car garage with a high ceiling could double as a mini-gymnasium. Subsequently, the raised ceiling would permit taller garage door openings, which could accept larger vehicles into the garage; for instance, a full-size truck with a fitted lift-kit of some kind. (!) Certainly, if specific gym flooring was used for the garage so that it could double better as a mini-gym, then some form of roll-out floor covering would be nice around the regular automobile parking areas. In addition, the garage doors would have to be covered on the inside, perhaps by special fitting panels, in order to protect them from heavy impacts. For example, forceful basketball bounces.

Original Conceptual Sketches

After an estimatation was made on how large to design the would-be garage/mini-gym, the rest of the house was filled in with the idea that its owner(s) would have a penchant for entertaining. Note the open stairway leading up from the dining room, which when cleared of its table and chairs could double as a dance floor (?). Moreover, for those brief visits, a conversation area of sorts extends off of the main foyer area. The inspiration for the alleged conversation area are nice waiting rooms. It's presence, along with the nearby washroom, allows the owner(s) to limit how much of the house interior is seen by others. Thus, the house has also been laid out with a sense of personal privacy. This is most evident in what can be viewed as his and her bedrooms on the upper level of the house. Hence, the whole house is full of ideas that attempt to differ from what is expected from a house. Meanwhile, I have left both the content and the size of basement open and free for new conceptualization.

A more detailed rationalization of the ground floor.

This is simply the ground floor of the proposed "Activity House" redrawn closer to a real-world scale. A few changes resulted, while the layout of the stairway is the most notable element that is open to further changes based on real-world dimensioning and planning. Moreover, I have omitted many of the possible windows that could be placed on the exterior of the house, as my main focus was on fitting all of the desired rooms in a more realistic and workable layout. There should also be some upper kitchen cabinets, too.

As a personal disclaimer, I wish to note that I have only taken one course in home design, while in high school. All these sketches were done solely for my own personal enjoyment.
