Survey of Queensland 2001 Election Results

Data shown below has been taken from the free book "QUEENSLAND ELECTION 2001" published by the Electoral Commission of Queensland. Similar books are still available for the 1995 and 1998 elections. See also www.ecq.qld.gov.au .

One Nation contested 39 out of the 89 electorates having been re-registered the day the election was announced. Note that as the 1998 state election was held on 13 June 1998 it would have been possible under the Electoral Act for the Labor Government to hold an election as late as 22 September 2001. It was an early election possibly called before the Queensland office of the Australian Electoral Commission had adequate time to finish its task of removing incorrectly and fraudulently enrolled people from the roll. About 800,000 letters were sent out shortly before the election date was announced. It appears the ALP leadership were afraid of what might happen to their vote if an accurate roll existed.

To follow the analysis you have to be aware of the difference between a candidate's primary vote, say 23%, and their distributed vote, say 41%. The latter is higher due to the distribution of the preferences of excluded candidates. Where a candidate is the first to be excluded or is the third candidate in a contest with 3 candidates there will be no difference between the primary and distsributed vote.
