6.43 Leonard Ernest MITCHELMORE (Albert Ernest MITCHELMORE , Charles Frederick MITCHELMORE , Nathaniel MICHAMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born on 5 Jan 1923 and died at Burnham-on-Sea War Memorial Hospital on 13 Jun 2007.

Len joined the Royal Air Force in 1940, graduating from Henlow two years later as an instrument maker. His first posting was to 32 MU St. Athens. There he met his wife Joyce, who was in the WAAF. But Len was sent to Egypt just before their daughter Kathryn was born, where he spent 18 months living in tents--there were no married quarters. Len bought himself out in 1948, returning to Bristol to see his daughter for the first time.

Initially, Len and Joyce lived in a prefab and Len found work with a watchmaker. Then they bought a general store in Bedminster but within 2 years moved to a house near the Three Lamps, where Len did watch-making from the front room. Shortly afterwards, they bought a nearby shop and set it up as a watchmaker and jeweller's, with Joyce serving and helping out with the jewellery side.

Len and Joyce moved to Hengrove in 1955. When the shop was bought up by the City for a road-widening project in 1967, Len entered Redland Teacher Training College, Clifton, as a mature age student, qualifying as a primary teacher in 1969. (His daughter was in her second year at the same college when Len started.)

Len's first appointment as a teacher was at a special school in Bradford on Avon. He only stayed 18 months (a relatively long time, by all accounts). In 1971, Len obtained a position as a class teacher at a primary school in Bristol.

Len and Joyce moved to Carhampton, Somerset, in 1980, where Len set up another watch repair workshop and taught music part time at a nearby school. In 1989, they moved to Burnham-on-Sea and Len finally sold his watch repair equipment in 2001.

Len always loved music. He learned trumpet from the members of the Dartmouth Borough Band, where his father played, and played in the same band and for dances in the Guildhall. Despite having lost half of the little finger on his left hand as a child, he also successfully learned to play the piano. He played the organ as an RAF apprentice, took up piano lessons again at the age of 30 (progressing to Associate level), and was organist and choirmaster at Counterslip Baptist Church, Hengrove, for many years. He continued to play the organ occasionally at Burham-on-Sea Methodist Church until shortly before his death.

Leonard married Joyce Frances PARSONS. Joyce was born on 14 Jul 1922 in Bristol and died on 19 Jul 2004 in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset. Her death was announced in the Western Daily Press.

Stan joined the RAF in 1946 as an aircraft apprentice. He trained at RAF Cranwell, where he played the trumpet at official functions, passing out in May 1949 as Leading Aircraftsman N0582977 (trade: Air Radio Fitter). After minor postings, Stan spent 3 years at RAF Benson, Oxfordshire, servicing radio and radar equipment in the Viking aircraft in The King's Flight. After a stint at RAF Wunsdorf, Germany, and Bomber Command in Cottesmore, Rutland, in 1959 he moved to RAF Wyton, Huntingdonshire. There, he passed his Chief Technician exam and worked on Vulcans, Valiants and Victors until about 1968, including visits to Malta, Cyprus, Canada, Malaya and Australia (Darwin, Adelaide and Townsville).

After 4 years at RAF Strike Command Headquarters at High Wycombe, Bucks., as assistant to the Squadron Leader, Stan moved to RAF Marham, near King's Lynn, where he was in charge of servicing equipment in the electronic workshops. In January 1977, Stan took early discharge and returned to Dartmouth.

Stan managed the Seale Arms public house, Victoria Road, Dartmouth, for two years and then had a number of electronics jobs in the Dartmouth area before retiring in 1995.

Stan has been an amateur radio fan (call sign G3XHC) since 1958, but is now relying on i-Link internet software to keep in touch with other radio amateurs. He loves fishing and had his own boat until 2002. Stan has been a member of the Brixham Orpheous Male Voice choir since 1987, and has sung all over Europe including Hameln, Germany, and the Llangollen Eisteddfod, Wales. Other hobbies include computing and photography.

6.45 Michael Charles MITCHELMORE (Albert Ernest MITCHELMORE , Charles Frederick MITCHELMORE , Nathaniel MICHAMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) is the compiler of this web site.

Michael moved with his parents from Dartmouth to Bristol at the age of 9. He attended Bristol Grammar School and then Trinity College, Cambridge, before returning to Bristol University to train as a mathematics teacher.

Michael's first teaching positions were in Ghana at Mfantsipim, Cape Coast; Tema Secondary School, Tema; and Achimota School, Accra, where he led the development of the Joint Schools Mathematics project (JSP). In 1971 he moved to the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, to study for a PhD in Mathematics Education. He did his PhD research in Kingston, Jamaica, returning there in 1975 to become an Education Officer in the Ministry of Education. In 1976 he transferred to the School of Education on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies where he worked on the Caribbean edition of JSP and became a Senior Research Fellow and Vice-Dean.

In 1984, he moved to Germany and from 1986-1990 was a Bavarian civil servant working at the Leibniz Computing Centre in Munich. In 1990, he moved to Sydney, Australia, to take up a position in the School of Education at Macquarie University. He is currently an Associate Professor of Education in the Australian Centre for Educational Studies at Macquarie University.

Michael inherited his interest in music from his father. He started learning the piano at the age of 7, but stopped lessons in high school and instead learnt “on the job” playing in a jazz band. But his main love has been singing, having been a member of such illustrious bodies as the Trinity College Chapel Choir, the Jamaica National Chorale, the Munich Motet Choir and the Sydney Chamber Choir. He has also sung in many musicals, most notably as Nanki Poo in The Mikado in Ghana and Frederick in The Pirates of Penzance in Jamaica. His proudest musical exploit was singing Mahler's Eighth Symphony with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs under Sir Simon Rattle, in a 2002 promenade concert in the Royal Albert Hall.

Michael is now semi-retired. He has recently taken over the M*CH*MORE One Name Study, which brings him in touch with MITCHELMOREs (and MICHAMOREs, MUCHMOREs, etc.) all over the world.
