Descendants of Mary Ann HAMBLING

First Generation

1.1 Mary Ann HAMBLING (also HAMLYN or HAMLIN) was christened on 23 Jul 1815 in Churchstow, Devon.

Mary Ann and her husband lived at first in Churchstow; in 1841, they were living in Charles Place. About 1846 the family moved to Jersey, all but the two oldest children returning to Churchstow before the 1851 census. Some time between 1851 and 1881, the family moved to Loddiswell (they were living in Fore Street in 1891). In 1901, Mary Ann was living alone at 1 Phoenix Rise, Loddiswell and receiving parish relief.

Mary Ann married John Distin STEER (also STEAR), son of Kingsbridge veterinary surgeon William STEER and his wife Mary née DUSTIN, on 18 Mar 1836 in East Stonehouse, Devon. John was born about 1813, probably in Kingsbridge, and died sometime between 1891 and 1901.

John was, like his father, a veterinary surgeon. Various records describe him as a cattle doctor (1841), farrier (1837-1851), veterinaire (1847), veterinary (1881) and horse doctor (1891).  In Jersey (approximately 1846-1850), he probably looked after the horses that carted stones for the building of the St Catherine's breakwater.
