I fell for Gorey the first time I opened to the page that begins..."A is for Amy who fell down the stairs...." But then, how could such genious fail to enrapture anyone I ask you? As time has gone by, I have become Gorey sick; there is an antiquarian/rare book store only a couple blocks from my flat, and I simply cannot go in. Unless, that is, I wanted to live on the streets and shower occasionally at the YMCA. The trade-off might not be so bad, considering the huge collection of Gorey books I'd have cusioning me from the pavement every night.
I take comfort in knowing that I am by no means alone. There are literally tons of us out there who would love to be able to snap up those little hardbacks, and illustrated paperback covers, with unabashed gusto... would that there were not rent and tinned soup expenses to see to. I must say though that I have managed to amass my own small-fortune's worth of Goreybilia. I consider it a noble disease!
If you are in need of a quick Gorey fix, might I make a suggestion or two....
