Nifty Life

Nifty Life is a cellular automata program for Mac OS X for running John Conway's Game of Life. Nifty Life is so named because it has a number of nifty features, such as:

Rivenumerator

I've been teaching myself to program for Mac OS X using Objective C and Cocoa. Rivenumerator is my first Mac OS X application.

Rivenumerator is a simple utility that allows you to quickly convert numbers between Arabic and Rivenese (the numbering system used in the popular computer game Riven). I think the Rivenese number system is quite elegant and neat, and I thought maybe this program would encourage me and others to use it more in every day life. In fact, there are probably people out there who have already adapted the Rivenese number system for personal notes, etc. They might find Rivenumerator handy.

KvL's Desktop Patterns

I like to create tiling patterns for use as desktop backgrounds. Here are some patterns that I've made. The first archive contains patterns that I've done using the paint module of Claris Works, so most of them are very geometric and icon-like in terms of color and design. Subsequent patterns have been made using the ultra-cool program known as Painter, by Fractal Design, and are more free-form and natural looking. More collections will be added to this section over time.

JavaTerrace

JavaTerrace is my first Java program. It supports all of the standard Terrace game variants, unlimited levels of undo, and other nice features. Version 3.12 fixes an apparently long-standing bug where menus didn't show up properly under Windows. This .zip file contains all of the files necessary to run JavaTerrace on any computer with a Java VM of version 1.3 or higher.

If you're reading this with a Java-capable browser, you can try an earlier version of the applet out right now on my JavaTerrace page.

Kaleidoscope Schemes

If you have a Macintosh, and you're sick and tired of looking at the same old graphical interface, you need Kaleidoscope. Kaleidoscope is a shareware control panel by Greg Landweber that allows you to change the look of your Mac's UI by selecting from hundreds of UI designs known as schemes. Here are some schemes that I've created.

Note: The download links actually link to the schemes' locations on kaleidoscope.net, so transfer rates may be different from what you've encountered for other files on my site.

KvL's Lode Runner Levels Pack

This package contains two - count 'em - two Macintosh Lode Runner level files. The catch is that one of them is for the original Lode Runner game that came out in 1984, and the other is for the more recent Lode Runner: The Legend Returns.

"Loads O' Lodes" is a 42 level scenario that I created for the original Lode Runner. Some levels are easy, some are creative, and some are downright evil.

"Karl's Evil Levels" is for Lode Runner: The Legend Returns. What I basically did was take the 13 most EVIL levels from "Loads O' Lodes" and adapt them to the new format. If these levels have you jumping up and down, pulling your hair out, and cursing my name, then I've done my job :-)
