Q: Fluid Replacement

I have a client who would like to try Ricelyte as he is having terrible bouts of diarrhea. Unfortunately, we can't find it in the stores. Do you know who the manufacturer is?

A: Ken Stringer (website administrator) responds:

Ricelyte was renamed Infalyte by its manufacturer, Mead Johnson. Try the baby food section. Or they can be contacted at (800) 345-0248. As an oral rehydration drink to combat diarrhea, Jennifer was quite high on it in her article Shit (Still) Happens. That was published in 1995 and since then, she found other rice-solid products that she thought were even better. (See her articles entitled Hurl Not and Gut Ecology.) CeraLyte, made by Cera Products, is the one she recommended over the others ultimately. It comes in a powder form, travels easily, and is cheaper. They can be contacted at (888) CER-ALYT(E) [237-2598] or go to their website at www.ceralyte.com.

A: Charlie Smigelski, RD responds:

Ricelyte is now sold as Infalyte (Mead Johnson)and is a rice-based Oral Rehydration Solution. Since you are shipping sterile water around America with it, it does cost $4 a liter.

I do think CeraLyte is a better product...better adult electrolyte profile, and at less than $1 a liter, is a better deal.
