Internal Alchemy

In times of good fortune, I feel blessed with the peace of someone gently cradled in the hand of Providence. This feeling, however, also causes a certain amount of ambivalence.

Would that I could recognize providence in each and every moment of my life -- not only during times of good fortune, but also during my darkest hours. I feel that if I could see the hidden workings of Providence during such times, perhaps I would also hear the call to yield under its guiding hand and thus render service.

In my meditations, I've come to realize that service to God boils down to one thing: to manifest grace in the world wherever grace seems to be in short supply.

These are perhaps unexpected ramblings of a sometime alchemist from a full-time scientist. Yet the alchemy of which I speak is very real to me and its mastery the most worthy of all human endeavors. In this world so often filled with hurt and hatred, disappointment and despair, I believe with all my heart in an internal alchemy that can turn pain and sorrow into peace, insight, clarity and compassion...in a word...Grace.
