Who Are We?

Medical Ethics Discussion for Interdisciplinary Collaboration at the University of Washington, also known as MEDIC at UW, began as an effort spearheaded by several undergraduates in the Bioethics and Humanities department to promote the awareness and education of sound bioethical reasoning for those pursuing any discipline at the University of Washington.

We hold discussions on contemporary bioethics topics to help gain a better understanding of the ethical ramifications at play in these modern issues. Classes taught by the faculty of the University of Washington can provide the framework upon how ethical reasoning can/should take place. Through active deliberation however, one can excercise ethical reasoning beyond the scope of what is discussed in the classroom. This organization is NOT designed to substitute an education in ethics--instead, it is geared towards providing an environment where individuals can debate and discuss about current issues in bioethics, and to promote public awareness of these issues.

With the recent passage of the "Death With Dignity Act," and President Obama's push to reinvigorate stem cell research, comprehension of the ethical concerns is becoming more important for every individual, not for those just pursuing a career in medicine or biomedical research.
