4th Session (October 22, 2001 - December 14, 2001)
This is my last session in the ELI, so a thousand emotions crowd in on me when I look back over the past. I took these classes with being conscious that this is the last chance to learn English from the ELI teachers. I was very glad and a little sentimental about that. Anyway, I really enjoyed my last classes.
College Success <7>
- Teacher: George Plautz
- Purposes: To improve oral proficiency and reading and writing for academic purposes, and to gain some experience with attending the real university class.
- Contents: We practiced listening and note-taking using videotaped lectures. It was very difficult for me to listen lectures and understand them. Usually, I could not understand the meaning exactly, even if I could catch the words completely. However, I attended an antoropology lecture as a special student. Also, I participated in other college's class with my classmates and made a group discussion with some American students of the class. It was a special experience and would be in my memory forever. We had an opportunity to do reserch on a topic, analyze it, and make a presentation about the result.
- Samples:
Oral Proficiency <7>
- Teacher: Ron Davison
- Purposes: To improve my spoken English in academic situations and in real life situations and to gain self-confidence for my speaking English. So, we needed to participate actively in class and to practice speaking outside of class as well.
- Contents: The teacher gave us a lot of topics to talk abou in class. We learned how to exchange greetings in American way, put oral interpretation of a reading, summarize short articles that we looked for and picked up and respond to them, hold an informal debate or discussion, make an impromptu speech, and so on. At the end of this class, each of us made a formal presentation about our own interests. It was very fun for me, because I was interested in other students' interests very much and it was also helpful to understand other culture.
Internet as a Resource for Academic Writing <7>
- Teacher: Randall Davis
- Purposes: To learn how to use the Internet as a tool for conducting academic reserch and polishing my writing skills and how to publish and share my writing with the global community on the Internet.
- Contents: I had taken this class before, so the teacher left the theme of my study using homepage to me. He just told me that "you should make some useful pages for your future." After having thought it over, I decided to create this homepege to introduce my experience in Salt Lake City to others and keep it in my mind.
Business English <7>

Glen's business class |
- Teacher: Glen Penrod
- Purposes: To have real life experience using English in business situation. Also, there were two main purposes that are "Developing Business Skills" and "Applying Business Skills" in this class.
- Contents: We memorized and used some new valuable vocabularies related to business scene every day and wrote our own business plan as a proposal. We also tried to be acquainted with business practices through some case studies. Periodically, we were assigned homework with a business focus, for example, marketing surveys or company analysis, to be done outside of class. And at the end of this class, we had an opportunity to present the result that we looked over a company or a product with using some visual aids.
