2nd Session (June 5, 2001 - July 31, 2001)
This was summer session, and there were some interesting classes.
Listening/Viewing American Videos <7>
- Teacher: Loni Manning
- Purposes: To gain confidence in listening to American English, to learn various aspects of American culture as depicted in the videos, to increase my written and spoken vocabulary and knowledge of idioms, and to develop critical thinking skills to form opinions through reading, listening, and discussion
- Contents: We saw five videos without any captions, discussed the contents, and reviewed them through exams.
1. Iron Will / 2. October Sky / 3. Frequency / 4. Return to Me / 5. Remember the Titans
*As final project, we also made various types of quizes for our classmates.
- Samples: I chose to make a crossword puzzle of Remember the Titans as my final project.
Final Project: Remember the Titans (question only)
Theatrical Production <6>

[up] Blanca, Yoshiko, George (teacher), [down] Mai, Haruka, Kazue, Hye-Jin |
- Teacher: George Plautz
- Purposes: To improve confidence in speaking English, to speak more naturally and fluently, and to try acting in an anxiety-free atmosphere.
- Contents: We wrote some dialogs as our homework and performed them. We also learned many expressions in some certain situations. It was very hard time for me because I had so much homework and had to memorize many words and dialogs. We learned how to stress and how to make a rhythm when we speak English. We made some short videos by ourselves - it means that we had to write the script, to organize the script, to act it, to edit it, and to add some effects by ourselves. In addition, we had to act the play which was titled "Plum Blossom and the Dragon" at the end of this session in the ELI party. This class really exhausted me, because originally, I am not a person who likes to act or perform something in public. But I believe that this class was very fruitful, and I will never forget this class, teacher, members, and the contents. I felt that jumping over higher hurdles makes things more impressive and very real.

At the acting party |
- Teacher: Ron Davison
- Purposes: To improve critical reading and writing skills in preparation for academic work and discourse
- Contents: I've never known how to write English academic essays even if in Japanese. So, it was very hard trying to write two-page essays as homework, but in the course of taking this class, I was awakened to the rules. This is my last essay of this class. (It was still in its basic form, but I was satisfied with the fact which I wrote this essay by myself.) Sample essay
Advanced Grammar <6>
- Teacher: George Plautz
- Purposes: To improve the understanding and use of English grammar in advanced communication
- Contents: We had a lot of homework, such as exercises and journals and also had a hard time to overcome such tricky English rules.
1. Count and non-count nouns / 2. Quantifiers and articles / 3. Adverb clauses / 4. Noun clauses / 5. Inverted and implied conditionals / 6. Two-word verbs / 7. Reported speech
Although a lot of homework made me distressed sometimes, it was very helpful for me to understand that I had to keep a journal with using these grammar which had just learned. And I could guess easily that teacher had to take a very long time to check our grammar.
