Aklan District Conservation Projects

Hi, my name is Sherry Nolan. I am an Asst. Scoutmaster for Troop 237 in Orinda, California and the Activites & Civic Service Person for the Aklan District. This web page was started when I was working on my Woodbadge ticket. I am an Owl, a good old owl too. Currently I am updating/rearranging this site. Please bear with me as it might look a little disjointed while I'm working on it.

The two conservation dates for the 2001/2002 school year are November 3, 2001 and Earth Day April 20,2002. These are Boy Scout and Cub Scout activities, if you have a Girl Scout in the family bring her too :)

November 3, 2001 We will be working with the park rangers and ecologist at Mt. Diablo State Park. 8:30 a.m. to noon. RAIN OR SHINE. If it is raining we will probably stop early. Each unit will need to obtain their own tour permit and bring a first aid kit. All Scouts should wear work clothes/boots/thick (leather if you have them) gloves and bring lots of water, and a snack. A note about work clothes, wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, layed clothing is a good idea also. Everyone is invited, bring your families, if you are from a different district, come on down we'd love to have you. Meeting place is the Live Oak campground. You can see where this is located within the park if you look at the map.

We will be primarily removing exotics as preparation to plant native species and maybe some oak tree work.

When you arrive at the gate be sure to tell the ranger you are with the scouts and he/she will issue you a free pass. If you love Mt. Diablo and want to hang around, by all means do so. The is a museum at the top and a short 1 mile hike around the museum. Cubs there are more than one requirement I am sure you can be working on, in addition to possibly working on the Jungle Book patch. Boy Scouts, this time counts either as community service or conservation work.

Check back to this site as time gets closer to the event for more information as it becomes available. Please RSVP with a rough head count, in order to assist with planning. Thanks!!

Earth Day, April 20, 2002 We will be doing something with the regional parks people, still working on the details. Stay tuned. The park department provides a BBQ lunch, yum!

For those of you who are interested in patches. What I have done in the past is ordered the round service project patch ($.90ea) and everytime I attended a conservation project I have attached little trees that fit around the edges($.45ea) Because it was such a big job for me to count, order and collect money from all the different groups attending I have decided to let you all decide for yourselves if you want patches. To order call The Patch Place at 1-888-507-2824 or go online. The service project patch has a brown and white hand shaking hands with a city outine in the back ground, patch #30013. The little tree fun arcs are curved to fit around the round center patch, patch # 22390. Your order will include sales tax and shipping. It works out to be about $1.60 per center/arc combo. When you order be sure to ask for a catalog. Of course you may oder whichever patch you want from the patch place.

All Scouts: I will be handing out the forms to fill out for the conservation Good Turn at both projects. You will need to fill them out, list the Aklan District Conservation Project, Sherry Nolan leader, in the proper blanks and turn in to your district executive who will send it to National to get your certificate, patches are available at the Scout Store. If you wish, either your district executive or myself will be happy to attend your pack/troop meeting to award the Certificates. Working on the World Conservation Award or the William T. Hornaday Award? Check out the requirements and information on the Aklan District Web Page.

IT'S A GREAT DAY FOR SCOUTING!
