Rosalía de Castro
1837-1885

Born in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Rosalía had a difficult life.  Her mother was of low nobility and her father was a priest who never officially recognized her birth.  After moving to Madrid when she was 15, she met poets from all over Spain.  Rosalía became a social poetess and is still a strong powerful figure of nationalism in Galicia to this day.  Many of her poems have been set to music and have been recorded by Amancio Prada. One in particular, Adiós Rios, Adiós Fontes, will always bring a tear to the eye of any Gallego.
