WITTS END

Last updated 22 Sept 04

This is our "odd" little layout, as no member is actively engaged in this scale, but it remains a favourite to work on and operate.

It is O gauge 16.5, that is, the stock is built to 7mm scale but runs on OO, 4mm, gauge track, so it is a large scale narrow gauge layout. All the stock and most of the track has been hand built. The locomotives have bodies built from anything and everything that was to hand and placed on old or surplus OO mechanisms.

The layout measures some 16ft x 18", and although a reference to 3-link couplings can be found, there is also a degree of automation as the trains can actually be uncoupled automatically.

It attends many shows and is always a crowd and operator pleaser.

(right)...."Hope" leaves the station with an early morning workers train

(left)....Meanwhile, one of the guards tends his flowers which have been potted-up on the guards van.....

(right).........and old Fred waits patiently to uncouple the incoming loco from its train.

(left)....The station pilot, aptly named "Pilot", pulls into the station with a goods train.

(right)....Full size hands here marshalling a train on the crowded fiddle yard. With 3-link couplings in use, it's a tricky job!

(left)....Two goods trains pass on the approach to the station. One waits in the loop as the other continues past.
