Wollongong/Menai Irish Dance Academy started as a very small school in Helensburgh (north of Wollongong) in 1981. Teacher, Charmaine May, had completed her TCRG in 1977 and her ADCRG in 1981. Charmaine had been a pupil of well renowned teacher Janice Surrie-Henderson and was helping her with her classes prior to starting out on her own.

The first studio competition was held in December, 1982 and had a total of 15 pupils entered. This first competition was judged by Jan Currie-Henderson. In December 1999 the studio competition had 84 pupils entered, with over 120 actually being enrolled at the time.

This school has been very successful, gaining many 1st places in State and SOuthern Cross Championships and high ranking places in Australian Championships. By 2000 the school, and Australia, had been represented by 6 dancers competing at the World Championships in Ireland.

Classes are now being held in Menai, Helensburgh, Woonona, Russell Vale, Gwynneville, and Unanderra. Pupil attend the school from many suburbs ranging from Kareela and Menai in Sydney's south, to Nowra, on the NSW South Coast. Classes are open to all ages including adults.
