Miscarriage is such a hard thing for anyone to endure, especially when you've been trying to conceive for a very long time. It's hard to imagine it taking just as long the second time around and then carrying those fears in your next pregnancy all over again.

I am going to touch base on the most common types of miscarriage and what may be the reasons for their occurrence.

Spontaneous Miscarriage

This is often called "Spontaneous Abortion" but I hate the word abortion when talking about miscarriage even if it is the medical term. Spontaneous miscarriages are miscarriages that happen as soon as something goes wrong. You start having signs of a miscarriage immediately. The reasons for the miscarriage can vary from low progesterone to other complicated problems that would take an extensive work-up to reveal.

Complete Miscarriage

This is when the placenta fully detaches from your uterus and is being expelled from your body. When this happens all the pregnancy tissues are removed from your uterus naturally and no D&C is needed to rid your uterus of the pregnancy.

Incomplete Miscarriage

This is when your body does not completely expel the pregnancy tissue from your uterus by itself. A D&C will be needed to ensure no complications occur.

Missed Miscarriage

Missed miscarriages are common and often account for one-time miscarriages for women. They are known to be caused by abnormal development in the baby or chromosomal abnormalities caused by defective sperm/eggs at the time of conception. Often your doctor finds that the baby's heartbeat has stopped before the 9th week of pregnancy- even if you are further along than that. The baby can remain without a heartbeat in your uterus for weeks without any symptoms of a miscarriage. A D&C is often needed when this type of miscarriage occurs.
