Part 2

Jack lay in his bed, trying to drift off to sleep. He sunk into the soft flanal sheets, trying to put the events of the day behind him. He was still quite shaken up from the attack on Karen. Altough the guy only was after his purse, what would have happened if he wasn't there? Jack didn't want to think about it. He closed his eyes, his mind starting to drift away.

A noise caused him to sit up quickly. A little on edge already, he listened, hearing footsteps. His heart began to pound as the footsteps drew closer. A shadow appeared, and his door creaked open.

"No, whoever you are, go away! You don't belong here! Leave me be!" he yelled grabbing a nearby umbrella that happened to be hanging on the wall.

"Jack!" a familiar voice whined. "It's only me!"

"Karen?"

He lowered the umbrella, setting it down as he flicked on the lights.

"Gosh, I'm sorry Kare, I didn't know it was you," he apologized gently.

"Jack, I know this is going to sound really silly but...I'm scared. Can I sleep with you? I mean---not with you, but you know, with you," Karen pleaded.

Jack really didn't know what he thought about it, but under the circumstances, Karen was very frightened, and she needed comforting.

"Okay," he agreed.

"Yeay!" Karen said excitedly. She dove into the bed, hiding under the covers.

Jack smiled and got into bed next to her.

"Goodnight Karen."

"Goodnight Jack."

Karen began to drift off to sleep, as she seemed to inch closer and closer to Jack. She truly was experiencing a feeling of safety and closeness from him, one that she did not experience with Stan. She knew that Jack would stop at nothing to protect her. She loved him deeply, and she knew that he loved her, too. As a friend, mind you. Finally, she fell asleep, feeling content that she would wake up the next morning safe.

Jack slowly opened his eyes. Completely forgetting that Karen was next to him, he rolled over, ramming right into Karen in the process.

Oh, right, Karen's here, he thought as he rolled in the other direction.

He lay there, gazing at her closed eyes, just realizing how pretty she truly was. Her face was relaxed, free of any signs of worry or distress.

"Come on, Kare, you love shopping! It will be fun, you know, no budget..." Jack pleaded with her.

"No Jack! The world is full of muggers out to get me. I'm not risking it," Karen moaned.

"Karen, I promise I won't let anyting happen to you, okay?" he said gently. "I stopped that man from taking your purse, didn't I?"

"Yeah, I guess, I'm just scared," she said, flopping down on the couch.

"I know you are, that's why you've got to face your fears. Come shopping with me, it will make you feel much better." He sat down next to her, taking her hand.

"Oh, okay!" Karen said. She let out a smile as the two headed out the door.
