The Chena Indian Village
This Yupik Eskimo winter parka was hand-sewn by the renowned
Athabascan beadwork artist Dixie Alexander (seated at table on the left)
and is being modeled by one of the guides. At the right is a cache (on
stilts) used for storing supplies and fur pelts.
(Many of the young native guides who work in the
village during the
summer are also students at the University of Alaska.
Also during the
summer months, Dixie makes her home here in the
village where she
also operates the fish wheel.)
A beaded moose hide jacket which Dixie made a few years ago has
been
purchased by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington for its permanent
collection of traditional native American art. Shown above is a
demonstration
and exhibit of some of her famous beadwork.

This is the jacket that is now in the Smithsonian. It is shown here
being modeled by Dixie's brother, Silas Alexander, Jr. Dixie is on the

Spruce bark huts such as this were used by the
Athabascans as primitive shelters.

Caribou were introduced into Alaska in the
1890s as a source of food for the native Alaskans. Although, today, the
size of the herds are greatly diminished from what they were fifty years
ago, some natives are still dependent on them for their subsistence.

We're sailing back to Fairbanks, flying to
Anchorage, bussing to Seward,
