Sciences

 

  •     The Guptas knew more about Math and Astronomy than other peoples

  •     The Arab numbers and decimal system were invented by the Guptas

  •     Learnt more about science from China, Greece, Egypt, Rome and other countries


Art and literature

 

  •     Art reached a very high standard

  •     They have learned much about sculpturing from the Greeks

  •     The frescoes of the Ajanta caves are a living testimony of the greatness of Gupta painting

  •     Kalidasa, often known as the Indian Shakespeare belongs to this age and is renowned for one particular work, the play “Shakunthala” as well as other famous plays

  •     Other famous playwrights of that period include Sudraka and Bhavabhuti

  •     The art of metallurgy was also highly developed


Education

 

  •     Few of the people were educated

  •     There were many Gupta Universities

  •     Students in the universities learned grammar, mechanics, medicine and philosophy.

  •     The schools in the empire was known to distant lands and students came from as far away as China to study religion in the universities


Clothes

 

  •     The people wore simple cotton or silk clothing

  •     Men wore a wide band of cotton cloth wrapped around the waist, the longer end passed from back to front between the legs and was tucked in at waist and they also wore turbans.

  •     The Guptas women wore saris, a sari is a long piece of cotton cloth that is wrapped around the waist and then passed over the left shoulder

  •     They also wore jewels and bracelets that were made of gold and silver


Religion

 

  •     The Gupta Period is regarded as the Hindu revival or renaissance for it was then that Hinduism re-established  the position it had before its supremacy was lost to the other religions

  •     This process occurred without any religious prosecution or intolerance.

  •     Though most people were Hindus, there were still many Buddhists.


Language

 

  •     The language used then was Sanskrit

  •     It was used in literature and other forms of writing

  •     Sanskrit was treated as the scared Hindu language
