Kolovai, a village of approximately 800 people, is central to Tongatapu Island's Western District.  It is a community that is known for its well-maintained appearance and active local pride.  Kolovai hosts a Health Center, a Banquet and Concert Hall, two primary schools, and the Western District Youth Hall and Computer Center.  Kolovai is fortunate to be the home of the Tonga's Prime Minister, Prince ‘Ulukalala Lavaka Ata, and his wife, Princess Nanasipau’u Tuku’aho.  Kolovai is also famous for its peka colony (fruit bats, otherwise known as flying foxes).

Kolovai is situated on a peninsula with its east side facing a vast lagoon, offering vistas of magnificent sunrises, and its west side open to the grand Pacific Ocean, which makes for unforgettable sunset viewings.   On the ocean side Irene, a Kolovai resident, runs the renowned Good Samaritan Resort, most well known for its Friday night dinner show and performance.  Next to the Good Samaritan lies the busy Masiata Beach and Picnic Area, possibly the most popular beach in the Kingdom.  Kolovai also has historical significance .  It was this village that welcomed Reverend Thomas, Tonga's first successful Christian missionary.
