Why Is This Reform
Needed
This reform is absolutely vital for
several reasons. Most important among
them are:
- That allowing one major industry,
media conglomerates in this instance,
to de-regulate itself and run amuck
in the face of the public interest
sets an extremely dangerous precedent.
These injustices have been going on
for far too long and we need to put
a stop to them, before other major
industries seek similar exemptions.
- The free give away of valuable public
resources to private entities for
their own profit, with no reciprocal
return of benefits or services, runs
counter to the logic of a capitalist
economy and good government.
- In an age of increasing threats
from natural disasters and terrorist
attacks it is absolutely vital for
our first responders, who serve 50%
of this country, to have a means to
efficiently communicate and coordinate
their actions in case of an emergency.
That this has not been guaranteed
already is as frightening as it is
absurd.
- The sooner we can complete the two
simple solutions offered in the previous
section, and evaluate their effects,
the faster we can move on to other
pressing issues in media reform such
as fair and free coverage to public
political campaigns, and obligations
to provide educational programming
for children.
