The differences between…   VOVINAM with  KARATE, TAEKWONDO, AIKIDO, & JUDO

Karate comes from JAPAN following the theory “Hard wins soft.” Karate schools use both hands as dangerous weapons. Karate followers train their hands to become faster and harder until they can use their hands to cut bricks, wood, or break stones easily. After attaining a higher level of hardness, they are very strong, self-confident and are believed to overcome any obstacle in life.

AIKIDO and JUDO also come from JAPAN with the theory “Soft wins hard.” The founders of these schools knew that a hard thing, which hits a harder thing, should be broken. For example, an earth lump, which hits a brick piece, will be broken. The brick piece will be broken when it hits a stone one. Ultimately, the stone piece will be cracked under an iron mass.

However, one morning after a snowstorm, the Judo Founder observed many big trees that had fallen and broken under the weight of the snow in the garden, while the thin and soft reeds were only bending down and then stood up after the snow melted. Therefore, the Judo Founders proved that there is not any effect when an iron mass or a stone piece is thrown hard on a cotton mattress. On the contrary, the hard iron mass or stone piece is pushed up in the air. From these basic concepts and the theory of balance, JUDO was born. JUDO followers learn how to combine the attack force from the opponent with their own power in order to build up strength to throw down the opponent. They are always in a defense position waiting for the attack of an enemy and then fight against them with the combined powers of their own and of their enemy. Therefore, JUDO is very helpful for someone else who wants to learn self-defense.

JUDO is very similar to AIKIDO, except AIKIDO followers learn to attack at bone joints in the body in order to give their enemy only an injury, not a death.

Taekwondo comes from KOREA with the theory “one kick equals three punches.” This school also uses the “Strong wins weak” theory. Taekwondo followers practice how to obtain feet that are as fast and hard as possible. Hence, during fighting, Taekwondo followers always try to dominate their opponents with very dangerous kicks. In addition, they try to train their bodies to have a strong resistance; therefore, making it imperative that they have very good health.

VOVINAM, a martial art of VIETNAM, is a school that was founded in 1938 by the great Kung Fu Master LOC NGUYEN. Before that time, the Founder had studied the tactics and techniques of any existing kung fu school in the world. He analyzed that the bad and good in each kung fu school and selectively chose only the best things and special ways of every kung fu school to combine with the original martial of VIETNAM to form VOVINAM.

For example, KARATE and Taekwondo have a very strong and hard attack way. These two schools’ followers are very self-confident. Too many time a very strong self-confidence easily turns into pride and conceit. Usually pride and conceit becomes scorn. Scorn creates carelessness or negligence, which are always the factor of defeat. On the contrary, AIKIDO and JUDO use quick hands, nimble feet and softness to annul the hard and violence. These two kung fu followers always learn to defend themselves modestly. They only protect before and attack and become passive and then they abase themselves. Therefore, these followers will be timid. Yet, life continuously varies and it is very difficult to themselves. Therefore, Kung Fu action should be strong sometimes and soft sometimes. During fighting, the attack should be fast and strong like a violent storm. When defending, the protection should be nimble and change smoothly. The martial art of Kung Fu can be neither too stiff and rigid nor very soft and flabby.

When studying and researching these above martial arts, the great Master Loc Nguyen, the VOVINAM’S founder deduced that “Anything in the earth should be followed with the theory of relatively and in fact there is nothing which is perfectly absolute.” Thus, a harder thing compresses a less hard one and softness becomes disability and inefficiency. And then, from these concepts, the contention of the Founder was VOVINAM will combine the hardness and softness such as positive and negative from them any material of this earth is created. For example, an electron (negative) and a proton (positive) have opposite signs and will repel themselves if standing alone. However, when combined, an electron and a proton will always come together to make an atom which is the smallest element that may destroy a large city, such as HIROSHIMA in JAPAN. Therefore, the Founder concluded that martial arts would have a good success if it has a good combination of hardness and softness.
