        BOMBERS defeat TEAM 8, 17-8

        June 2, 1998
        AP Wire Service
        Lucas Valley

A nine run rally in the bottom of the third inning broke the game wide open for winning pitcher Duncan Sutherland as the Bombers went on to beat TEAM8 in seven innings by the score of 17 to 8.

Sutherland scattered 11 hits over 7 innings and struck out 1, in his 1998 LFL debut before a small crowd of 8 spectators at the Ranch.  A spectacular catch by Bomber outfielder David Leighton stopped a late inning rally in the sixth, but EIGHTs' batters were not able to put together more than four back-to-back hits during the contest.

Bomber Dugan Beach, coming off injured reserve just before the game, collected a career best 6 RBIs in the effort, just missing hitting for the cycle with a single, double and home run.  Bomber batsmen in the third, fourth and fifth positions contributed an additional six hits, four runs and 7 RBIs.

Team captain Chris Stately was upbeat after the win.  When asked what he'll be doing between now and his upcoming game against TEAM3, Stately replied, "I'm going to Disneyland."

        BOMBERS defeat TEAM 2, 15-9

Bomber Ace, Duncan Sutherland, held off a furious rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve a 15-9 win over TEAM 2 last night at the Ranch.  It was Sutherland's fourth complete game win in as many starts.

Bomber batsmen went to work in the top of the first, scoring four runs on a walk, two hits and three errors.  TEAM2 answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs on two hits and two errors.  The Bombers  added six more runs to their lead in the top of the second, and knocked TEAM2 starting pitcher, Paul Purdy, out of the game.  Solid hitting from team captain Chris Stately, OF Marc Diaz, OF David Leighton, and OF Peter Chesloff highlighted the inning.  The Bombers added four more in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

A strong defensive performance by the Bomber infield blanked TEAM2 for 5 innings, with a spectacular double play turned in the bottom of the fourth by third baseman Dugan Beach and second baseman Rachel Rotmensz.

        TEAM 1 defeats BOMBERS, 16-14

Despite a furious 6 run, 7 hit rally in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday night, the Bombers came up just shy of winning their sixth straight, and bowed to TEAM1, 16-14.

3B Dugan Beach (3-3, 3 runs) led off the seventh with his third hit of the night, a double to left.  1B Todd Krish followed with a sharp single over the shortstop's head to cash in Beach.  Captain Chris Stately and 3B Jeff Sanders (3-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) followed with back-to-back singles, loading the bases for Bomber ace, Duncan Sutherland.  Sutherland (2-3, 1 run, 2 RBIs) stroked a line single into the gap in left center, scoring two more.  2B Rachel Rotmensz (1-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) dropped a perfect single behind the shortstop for another run and took second on the throw.  CF Richard Fife slapped a single into the gap in right center, scoring Rotmensz.  After David Weitzberg reached on an error, C Kate Haigler grounded into a double-play.  Michelle Bornstein ended the inning with a bouncer to the pitcher.

Sutherland (5-1) had run into trouble in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings, allowing 11 runs, 6 of them earned.  "I wanted to get a few back.  We were eight runs down.  It was heartening to see that we didn't just lie down and go one-two-three."

Other outstanding offensive performances were turned in by Krish (3-3, a double, 3 runs and 3 RBIs), CF Stately (2-2, a SAC fly, 2 runs and 2 RBIs), LF James Cook (2-3, 1 run), and RF Scott Loethe, (1-3, an inside the park HR, 1 run, 2 RBIs).

A questionable call in the bottom of the sixth inning involving Krish enabled a late inning TEAM1 rally.  Third baseman Dugan Beach fielded a sharp grounder and made the long throw to an outstretched Krish.  The umpire ruled that the first basemen had pulled his foot.  The error, charged to Krish, resulted in 4 unearned runs.

Bomber clean up hitter, SS Vince De Quattro (0-3), was disappointed. "I stank out there tonight.  After coming close to parking one in the first, I kept swinging for the fences, and I undercut the ball.  My team needed some RBIs, and I didn't produce."  De Quattro also booted a potential inning-ending play in the fourth, and made a questionable play on a popup in the sixth.  "I should have been in better position for the throw to the plate."  In all, the Bombers made an uncharacteristic 10 errors in the game.  LF Marc Diaz and De Quattro, the Bombers number 1 and 3 batsmen, were a collective 0-6, with one strikeout.

CF David Leighton (2-2, 1 run, 1 RBI), was lost in the bottom of the fifth to an ankle sprain.  After doubling in the top of the inning, Leighton tied the game at 8 by capitalizing on three throwing errors and scoring on a daring run from second base.

The Bombers eagerly await the return of Peter Chesloff and Eric Shroeder for their rematch vs. TEAM3 next Wednesday.

"Yeah we really need their bats," Stately said after the game at New George's.  "But no amount of offense will make up for a lack of defense.  We have always had a strong defense.  I think the winning streak affected our focus.  Bet that we'll come out strong next week."

        BOMBERS defeat TEAM 1, 25-24

        July 21, 1998
        AP Wire Service
        Lucas Valley, CA

In an unprecedented offensive showing, Bomber batsmen combined for 31 hits over six innings, enroute to a 25-24 slugfest over cross-town league rival TEAM1.

Power hitting first baseman, Eric Schroeder, hit two home runs in as many at bats and drove in three runs, while third baseman Vince DeQuattro hit for the cycle, delivering four runs, four hits, and four RBIs.

Nearly every Bomber batter got into the act, as TEAM1 pitcher, Doug Evans, was shelled for 11 runs in the bottom of the 5thinning to blow the game wide open.

The score was close until the fifth.

The top of the inning saw TEAM1 batsmen spray eight singles for seven runs, setting the stage for the Bomber comeback.  With one out, down 15-10, the Bombers pounded out eight straight singles of their own, including a sacrifice fly by OF James Cook.  Bomber scoring was capped by Shroeder's towering three-run homer into the seats in deep left.

Standout performances by catcher, Kate Haigler, and second baseman, Rachel Romensz, proved to be the difference in the outcome of the game.  The pair combined to produce a 4-for-6 effort, scoring three runs and driving in three.

Pitcher Duncan Sutherland (7-2) was roughed up for 8 runs in the first inning.  He pitched scoreless ball until the fifth, when he experienced some control problems, giving up two walks and eight hits for 7 runs.   Consistently solid defensive play allowed Sutherland to regain his control in the fifth, sixth and seventh, ultimately stopping a five-run TEAM1 rally in the top of the final frame.  First baseman, Krish, made a highlight reel play in the fourth, when he tagged a baserunner on an errant throw from Beach.  Platooning third baseman, Jeff Sanders, made a clutch play in the sixth to stop a TEAM1 threat.

Leadoff hitter, Marc Diaz, had a stellar night, going 4-for-4 and scoring in all four chances.  The game winning RBI was produced by power right-hand hitting, Todd Krish, who scored shortstop Dugan Beach on a deep fly to left in the bottom of the sixth.

The offensive explosion raised the Bombers' combined batting and slugging average to .445 and .544 respectively, tops in the league.

TEAM1 was the same team that defeated the Bombers by the score of 16-14 three weeks ago.  The Bombers have a bye next week.

        Bombers Defeat Ranch Rival, 22-6

        August, 12, 1998
        AP Wire

The highly anticipated rematch between the league's top two teams dissapointed those looking for a repeat of the squeaker won three weeks ago by TEAM4, 16-14.

Missing several key players, including their starting pitcher Mark Pendergraft, three TEAM4 pitchers surrendered 21 runs in the first four frames.

Team captain, Chris Stately led the attack in the top of the first inning with a one-out solo shot lined over the left field fence.  The next ten BOMBER batters reached base, scoring eight runs.  The tally would prove to be all they would need, as they cruised to a 22-6 victory.

Joining Stately in leaving the yard were first baseman, Todd Krish, who hit a 4th inning 2-RBI blast to the gap in deep right center, and shortstop Vince De Quattro, who hit a solo shot to the right field wall in the top of the 5th.

TEAM9 continued to exhibit the dominating offensive power that has placed them at the top of the league, (9 wins, 2 losses), scoring 22 runs on 22 hits, including four doubles, a triple and three home runs.

BOMBER ace, Duncan Sutherland, scattered nine hits over seven innings, and pitched his strongest outing in over a month, shutting down TEAM4's vaunted offensive attack.  Mustering only two extra-base hits in the first and fifth innings, TEAM4 was kept mostly on the ground, with one spectacular exception.

In the bottom of the fifth, with no outs and runners threatening from second and third, outfielder David Leighton got a great jump on a line drive to shallow center, made a leaping catch for the out, and was able to double the runner off second base.  Though the run scored on the sacrifice, the next batter lined to third, and TEAM4 was turned away.

In seven innings, the BOMBERS committed only two errors, their lowest total of the season.

The BOMBERS play TEAM 5 (5-4) on Monday, August 17th, and TEAM7 (3-6) on
Wednesday, August 26th.  Victories over these two teams will wrap up the season championship for the BOMBERS, and will earn them a bye in the first round of the tournament.

        End of Year Stats

        Semptember 16, 1998

        SEASON MVP: DUNCAN SUTHERLAND

As a pitcher, Duncan led the team to an overall record of 12-3, limiting opposing batters to a meager .350 BA.  His ERA of 4.0 was lowest in the league.  As a hitter, he led the team with an amazing .700 BA, including 18 RBIs.  His one-out single in the top of the seventh inning of the final game tied the score at 12, setting the stage for our improbable comeback victory.

        PLAYOFF MVP:  CHRIS STATELY

Chris improved throughout the season, peaking in the playoffs with a scalding .750 BA and 10 RBIs in the three game series.  His work in the outfield led to 3 assists, and stopped potential run-scoring rallies.  His careful leadership and fiery motivation help turn things around in the final game, when we found ourselves down 12-0 with three innings to go.

        MOST IMPROVED:  JEFF SANDERS

For a guy that hasn't played ball since grade school, Jeff's contribution during the playoffs vaulted him past others vying for most improved player.  His hot hitting in the series, (.600 BA, 6 RBIs) helped get us to the blue ribbon ceremony.

FIRST ANNUAL BOMBER AWARD:  DUGAN BEACH

Our club is feared around the league due to our ability to go yard deep into our lineup.  In appreciation of this distinction, the BOMBER award is given to the player with the highest slugging percentage, (TOTAL BASES / AB).

        Dugan Beach:  SLG 1.156, 2 HR, 4 2B, 3 3B, 20 RBIs

        TEAM STATS

Consider this:  in fifteen games, you guys scored almost 200 runs on 225 hits.  as a team, you guys hit better than .400 all season.  but where you really shined was in the tournament.  pounding out 47 runs on 51 hits, including 16 2Bs, 4 3Bs and 3 HRs, you equalled half of your seasonal stats in just three games (double, triples and home runs).

With a tournament victory under your belts, you're seasoned veterans and surely a force to be dealt with next spring.

I just wanted to tell you how much fun i've had playing with you guys this season.  i was amazed by our consistent turnout all season, and the level of dedication each and every one of you made to improving the team.  there are many unsung heroes not mentioned above.  players that contributed a timely hit or a perfect throw.  players that simply boosted our morale with a positive attitude.

I'd like to thank the players that helped me keep score this year:  Scott Loethe, James Cook, Peter Chesloff and Todd Krish.  I think keeping the book helped us fashion a line-up that turned out to be unstoppable throughout the season.  Thanks again for your time.

Another thanks to Chris for providing beverages after the games.  If we win next year, we'll dump a real ice chest on you, promise.

Here's the stats.  Because i missed two games, they are incomplete.  Note that the vs. team stats are ranked by batting average.  It's interesting to note that we played some of our best games against team one during the regular season, and some of our worst games against team two.

In the end, it didn't matter, one way or another...

        Have a great off-season!
