vic1847 From on Monday, 8 September, 2008

I am writing to you from Tauranga, New Zealand.
I was looking at your very informative web pages 'Victoria Before 1848' and all the lovely reference material therein and I would like to peruse some of the material available.
I am a descendant of 2 transported convicts - Christian Asquith and Susan Smith who arrived in Hobart 1820 and 1824 respectively. One of their daughters Susannah married Henry Moses Mutch in 1852 and settled in Merino. Now it is Henry whom I would like to track down, in particular how he came to Australia around 1847/1848.
I am sure he was not a convict but one of my aunts once told me that she thought he may have been a 'Keeper of the Keys' - presumably on a convict ship. I feel Ian Hughes' books might be helpful in solving the mystery. My wife and I are coming to Melbourne in October and would like to check these books out. I am not exactly clear as to where they are located - in the State Library, PRO or the GSV. From the information on your web site I suspect it is the PRO. I would greatly appreciate your comment re their location.
Kindest regards, Michael Howell

Try Tasmanian Departures
Asquith came to Vic in 1846 - Mrs and 4 chn left Hobart 31 Aug 1846 for Port Phillip, on the Julia, as Immigrants.
From the Hobart Courier, the brig Julia, 135 tons, arrived 26 Aug from Port Phillip with sheep, and Cabin passeners Mr Chales Hall and Mr Merrick. The paper dated Sat 5 Sep 1846 records the Julia sailed 1 Sep for Port Phillip with emigrants. The list of cargo includes 20,000 feet timber, 50,000 shingles, 5000 lathes and other items for D McPherson, 3000 staves for FA Downing

Also for the early days may be the Launceston Courier which starts in 1840 and includes shipping to Portland Bay.

Looking for marriage in Vic
As we are in 1852, that was before registration, so purchasing a birth certificate of a child born after 1855 may give details of birthplaces and marriage, I have scrolled and found more, different spellings, will get a list for you
Found wedding 1852 #31630 at Richmond Cof E, Susannah to Mueth, another spelling problem.
You can be lucky at this time, depends on what sort of church records the minister had to fill out. Vic certificates can be bought online at Vic bmd
After you have the details of the marriage, you can hope to find names of parents, age and birthplace - children's births have some details of parents.

Christian Asquith (see image 28, Convict Conduct register), was tried 12 Apr 1830 at Middlesex arrived in Tasmania 1 Dec 1820 on the Maria, which left Portsmouth 10 Aug 1820
Susan Smith married Christian Asquith on 8/9/1828. She was transported on Brothers, in 1824 and I believe she met Christian in gaol in Hobart . They had a child out of wedlock and before their release (1828?) His name was James. Susan was often called Susannah by Christian and it seemed to stick. C died in 1857 aged 57 and Susannah (Susan b. 1800) at 101 in NZ.
Christian Asquith 1800 - 1857 wed at Hobart, Tasmania on 8 Sep 1828 to Susan Smith 1800 - 1901 aged 101 years and moved to Victoria 1846

George Asquith 1840
Sarah Jane Asquith 1841 - 1843 lived 2 years
M Asquith 1843 stillborn
Robert Asquith 1844
It was their daughter Susannah who married Henry Mutch in 1852 at St Stephens, Richmond and they moved to Merino a few years later. There has also been some debate about S's DOB. I estimated it as 1837 based on the date (1922) and age (85) when she died. I have her DC. She was very young when she married as you also noted. And she had 14 children, her first 2 dying in infancy. Their son George came to NZ and my mother was his eldest daughter.
