PROLOGUE
I heard my name being called by my mother. She was always concerned for her daughters, but I always thought that she favoured me most. There were three of us (four including our mother), and we all made due very well. In fact, so well that my mother had exciting news to tell me…
"Oh, Jillian," my mother scolded, "you're all dirty, and there's someone here to see you, too."
Me? At first I didn't believe her, not many people came here to see me. "Who is it?" I asked.
"Cleave Van Voreen, and I've arranged something wonderful, you're going to be married to him!"
"When?!" I cried. This couldn't be happening. I didn't even know him! "Mother, you can't force me to marry, what was his name? Oh! Cleave Van Voreen."
"Yes I can," she snapped and threw me a self-satisfied look. "And I already did. You both are to be married in one week from today."
One week! That wasn't nearly enough time to marry someone, let alone someone I'd never even met! "Mother," I protested, "you can't be serious!"
"Too late for that," she threw back at me. "Too late for that."
At that moment I thought that my life was going to crash down on me - I only wished that it did…
