OBSESSIONS OF A CHILD
Pikachu,
Raichu, Charmander, Mewtwo
. Your child is crazy about them and mutters
their names even in his sleep. Are obsessions like this normal, or should
you be getting worried?
Children
do get obsessed by any number of things as they go through different
phases of childhood. Some may be obsessed by television characters (the
Power Puff girls?), or their best friend, or even books, religion or
a hobby. Obsessions are a normal part of growing up and can be beneficial
to the all-round development of the child.
One mother,
for example, felt that her child's fixation with Thomas the Tank Engine
helped him to learn many concepts like differentiation in colour, shape
and size as well as moral values like honesty and helpfulness. Her child
loved watching the television series and reading the books about Thomas
and his train friends.
On the
other hand, if the obsession interferes with his sleep, schoolwork or
family life and if it changes his behaviour or leads him to lie or steal,
you should be concerned. Help your child restore balance in his life.
Discuss issues with him, for example, how much time can be spent on
the activity. Do not let his obsession interfere with family life. Be
firm with rules. Ensure that he does his schoolwork and carries out
his chores, and also establish family times when everyone in the house
comes together, for example, dinner-time and a pre-bedtime chat.
