  1. SALUD

ATENCIÓN PARA LA COMUNIDAD - Redes Sanitarias - HealthNetwork System

A.J. Turgeon, Professor of Agronomy at Penn State University has developed a case-studies course in turfgrass management on the web. It can be accessed at the following URL:

http://www.cas.psu.edu/docs/casdept/turf/turf436/turf436.html
Each course page begins with a description of the case organized as a series of hyperlinked web pages. In most cases, a Study materials section follows; then, an assignment section with downloadable Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets or Project schedules with an email form for attaching and submitting the assignments.

Are you or your colleagues interested in learning how to teach, or support learners, using computer conferencing and the Internet? If so, the Open University (IET) can still offer you a place on its 3-month online course which starts again on September 15th. The overall aim of the course is to help you decide how (if at all) computer conferencing and network resources may be able to help to contribute to teaching or training in your own organisation. We hope that you will produce a proposal outlining the potential benefits and limitations of computer conferencing (perhaps producing a design for an online course or service for a specific group of learners or other users) in your organisation.

For further information, or to make a booking, please contact Brenda Parish (Courses Office), IET, The Open University, Milton Keynes MK7 6AA. Telephone: 01908 653055. Fax: 01908 653744

The International Consortium for Courseware Engineering is holding its fourth annual Summer Institute on Advanced Learning Technology at the University of Minnesota 28 July - 8 August 1997. Special focus topics this summer include open/distance education and the design and management of networked-based interactive learning environments. If these areas are of potential interest to you or your colleagues, then please take a look at the CCE web site at http://www.ifi.uib.no/cce/ for additional details. The courses are intensive, lecture-laboratory courses emphasizing practical knowledge and skills. The University of British Columbia is offering an online course on technology-based distributed learning starting September 2, 1997. http://itesm.cstudies.ubc.ca/info/
This course is the first of five being developed which together will constitute a post-graduate certificate in technology-based teaching, subject to formal academic approval. The development of these courses is a collaborative effort between the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada and the Monterrey Institute of Technology (ITESM) in Mexico.

Two workshops: ADAPT-IT provides information on general access to computer systems and information technology. EASI-WEB provides guidelines for universal design of web pages. Check out: http://www.rit.edu/~easi/workshops.html

I suggest you view http://www.4pm.com for a leading example of an online course. It offers audio lecture, slides, and email Q and A.

In five weeks, you can learn HTML, design a webpage for your course, and be ready to incorporate webpages in your teaching! TEP's HTML and Webdesign for Educators is designed to help instructors k-higher ed. create their own web materials and projects. This online course is taught via email (with email tutorials, discussions, and question/answer sessions), WWW, and weekly live sessions at an eduMOO.
Our next session of this course begins Tuesday, August 19, with the live sessions being held from 7:30-9:30 pm every Tuesday for five weeks. Tuition for this course is $125.
If you are interested in participating, please send email to Catherine Thwing at:

Intended for educators and corporate trainers, this course gives an overview of the evolving field of distance learning, including technologies, academic theories, instructional designs, supporting mechanisms, and evaluation. After taking this class, you should be able to make informed choices about teaching courses via distance learning. A combination of methodologies is used to address all learning styles, including lectures using a computer display, videotapes of distance learning classes, internet access to show courses offered through the internet, discussion of factors influencing adoption, group planning activities, and hands-on experience in a distance learning classroom.

Please note: This course is taught simultaneously in two locations. The instructor is present in the San Ramon site (Section 1) and communicates with students at the San Francisco site (Section 1A) via live, two-way television. Two Days: October 8-9: Wed.-Thrs., 8:30 am-5 pm
Section 1: San Ramon
Room A2, UC Extension Contra Costa Center, 2272 Camino Ramon $225 (EDP 201681)
Section 1A: San Francisco
Room 8, UC Extension Downtown, 150 Fourth St., Sixth floor

Primarily the network of choice is ISDN (Integrated Switched Digital Network). We have the capability of transmitting at different bandwidths from 2 x 64 kps to a full T-1 depending on what the remote sites capabilities are. We also have a multi-point conferencing unit which can bridge up to seven sites simultaneously running at 384 kps. This allows SUNY to broadcast to multiple facilities our weekly resident conferences, rural medical student education (RMED), grand rounds to clinicians at remote sites for CME credit and for patient education.
