The most stunning victory in University of Memphis football history occurred on November 9, 1996 when the Tigers upset No. 6 ranked Tennessee Volunteers, 21-17, at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee.

Quarterback Qadry Anderson hit tight end Chris Powers in the right corner of the end zone with 34 seconds left to play in the game to shock a record crowd of 65,885. A key play during the drive was a 41-yard pass down the right sideline to Chancy Carr, who was pushed out of bounds at the Tennessee 16. The win, which was televised by CBS network, was the first in the series against the University of Tennessee in 16 attempts. Not only were the Volunteers ranked sixth nationally but they were also led by Peyton Manning, a Heisman Trophy candidate and future NFL quarterback.

Tiger fans celebrated Memphis' first win ever over intrastate rival Tennessee by rushing onto the field and tearing down the goal posts.
