OPIM 203C: Business Information Systems

Webopedia: Online Dictionary for Computer and Internet Terms
Owned and managed by Jupitermedia Corporation, Webopedia is a free online dictionary for computer and Internet technology related words, phrases, and abbreviations. Webopedia avoids using technical jargon, so even computer novices will have no problem understanding the definitions given by the site. Full-time experienced editors gather information from numerous sources in order to provide each definition in the database. Updated daily, and complete with quick references and a "Term of the Day," this is a very helpful website for OPIM 203C students who are learning the basics about how PCs operate.

CHM: Timeline of Computer History
Provided by the Computer History Museum of Mountain View, California, this timeline presents detailed text and pictures of significant points in the history of computing. Users can browse by year, by major topics, or search for specific keywords. Navigation is very convenient with the help of "Next," "Previous," and "More About..." options on each page. The timeline begins at 1945 but unfortunately ends at 1990.

Operations Management Articles
This comprehensive collection of OM articles is provided by the Operations Management Center of the McGraw-Hill Company. While the design of the site is not very pleasing to the eyes, it is simple and informative. Titles are provided with direct links to the articles. This is an extremely valuable resource of knowledge, but be aware - there are some dead links on the page.

OPIM 212: Advanced Information Technology

BlackBeltVB FAQ's
Set up like a training dojo for Visual Basic programmers, this list of Frequently Asked Questions ranges from "beginner" to "black belt." The answers to the questions are very explicit and easy to follow. There is a search option at the top of the page that will search the entire site. The rest of the site is helpful as well, but you must register to access most of the information.

EZVB eztips
Geared toward the more advanced VB programmer, this site offers useful tips and code for improving VB programs. While the creators of this site are all professional VB contractors, they obviously lack the creative flair for building webpages. The layout is pretty bad, but the VB tips are excellent.

vbCity Forums
vbCity is an online community of VB and .NET programmers that come together to share knowledge, source code, and tutorials with fellow programmers. Information technology professionals, hobbyists, and students can all be found chatting away on these forums. This is the perfect place to get personalized help with any VB problems or questions. There is even a special forum for "VB Newbies."

While it is generally geared toward users with some previous Access experience, the site offers assistance on relatively simple Access operations as well as the more advanced features of the program.

A Gentle Introduction to SQL
Andrew Cumming of the School of Computing at Napier University (Edinburgh, UK) designed this very useful SQL site. This site is particularly helpful for OPIM 221 students because everything is organized by database software. Among the supported software are Oracle and Access, which are both taught in 221. There are interactive SQL tutorials along with SQL user manuals for both Oracle and Access. The quick reference "How to..." list has to be the highlight of this site. This tool allows users to view the code for performing common functions with SQL, once again organized by software, as well as any variations between the different software programs.

Linksys: Products
Linksys is a popular seller of networking hardware. While this site was created primarily to promote Lnksys's products and business, it can be used as a tool to learn more about the hardware involved in networking. OPIM 222 students learn about most of the products described on this site, and it is always helpful to read up on the features and product specifications. Detailed information is offered for every piece of hardware on the site.

Computer Cable and Network Accessories - Cables N Mor, Inc
Cables N Mor is an Internet-based retailer for cables and other networking hardware. Once again, this site was created primarily to sell Cables N Mor's products, but can also be used as a resource to learn more about cables, hubs, adapters, and other hardware. The style and appearance of the site is kind of childish, but the information and products contained in the pages is excellent. This site offers relatively competitive prices, which is a good thing to keep in mind when working on the networking project that every 222 student is assigned.
