Zog’s HTML Made Easy
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 1ST BEFORE YOU GET STARTED

WHAT IS A BROWSER?
WHAT IS HTML?
WHAT IS A URL & A DOMAIN NAME?
WHAT DO I USE TO CREATE OR EDIT MY WEB PAGE?
WHERE CAN I STORE MY WEB PAGE AT?

BROWSERS
  • The 2 most common browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer (MIE) and Netscape Communicator (NC). A browser will scan HTML tags on a site and translates those tags into a Web Site. MIE, NE, or other browsers may interpret HTML tags a slightly differently. Not all HTML tags are supported by all browsers. If a tag is not recognized by a browser, it will simply ignore it. If you are a beginner, I would NOT concern yourself too much with the different characteristics of the different browsers. Just concentrate on becoming an expert at HTML. Trial and Error is the best way to become familiar with your browser.

HTML
  • HTML (hyper text markup language) is a computer language that is used to create documents on the Web. I know it may be confusing at 1st, but sooner or later you will begin to understand how HTML works. HTML documents are text files that consist of HTML tags (tags are instructions that tell your browser what to show on a web page) which place the text and images wherever you want to place them on the your web page.

URL DEFINITION and DOMAIN NAMES
  • URL is the standard web address that takes you to a document anywhere on the World Wide Web (WWW). MOST URL’s (and the only ones you should worry about for now) start with “http://”.
  • Try this example. Type “http://www.oocities.org/dan0411” in your address. Hit ENTER.
  • A Domain Name is EXACTLY the same thing as a URL. The difference is that you can choose your own Domain Name for your URL. For example one of my Domain Names is danherzog.com. So my URL is http://www.danherzog.com. The ONLY requirement is that the Domain Name cannot already been taken.
  • Most Domain Names 99% of the time end in .com or .net. There are also Domain Names that end in .edu (education related), .gov (government) or .org.
  • You can buy a domain name. I suggest putting this off at 1st until you become fairly knowledgeable at HTML. BUT please feel free to Email Me, and I can recommend serveral Domain Name Providers (free of charge of course).
  • A Note is that if you don’t want any ads on your web-page you will have to pay an initial set-up fee of about $75, and then a membership fee of $35 a year.
  • You can get a FREE domain name at NetZero. It is a good service for the “light user” who wants to get a EASY TO REMEMBER DOMAIN NAME, but doesn’t want to pay an up-front fee. But BE CAREFUL, the DOMAIN NAME DOESN'T NOT REMIAN FREE FOREVER. IN OTHER WORDS THE GIVE IT TO YOU FOR FREE, THEN AFTER A YEAR OR SO THEY ASK YOU TO REGISTER. IT CAN COST FROM $9.95 TO $19.95 A YEAR. SO IT STILL IS A PRETTY GOOD DEAL.
  • I know this part can be very confusing, but may be very necessary if you are trying to open or expand your business by creating a Web Site. If you have any questions please just give me an Email Me. I would be glad to help.

FINDING AN EDITOR
  • You will need an Editor. An Editor is just a place to type in your HTML code so that you can send the file to your Web host. This can be the editor that comes with your Web space. I highly recommend Yahoo/Geocities Advanced Editor File Manger. You can also use a plain text editor, like Microsoft Word, WordPad, or NotePad. Then copying and pasting your text files to your editor. Some sites provide what the call Drag and Drop Editors. With these editors you do not have to know HTML. Avoid these at all costs if you are serious about creating a cool web page. It can be tempting to use these drag and drop editors, but editing and updating your web page becomes very difficult.

WEB SPACE
  • You need to find Web Space on the WWW so that other people can view your Web page. 1st find a Web Provider that has an Editor that comes with it. Try to find a host that provides you with an Advanced Editor that will enable you to write straight HTML. An Advanced Editor will allow you more freedom to create a web-page exactly how you want it.
  • There are many Web Providers. I use (& recommend)Yahoo/Geocities. It is 100% FREE. They have an excellent user-friendly Advanced Editor, excellent support, and their pop-up ads is very small.
  • AOL provides its members with Free Web Space also. I am not a user of AOL so I cannot comment. I suggest if you are a heavy and strong-supporter of AOL, then try it.
  • Some other providers are I would stay away from are Tripod and Angelfire. Although I cannot speak from experience, people have told me that their service and support is slow.
