Delhi, Capital of India

Delhi, the capital of India is known for its several and unmatched tourist attractions. Being capital of India, Delhi is a commercial hub. Here one can find hundreds of shopping complex and tourist attractions, which shows the excellence of Mughal architecture. Delhi has two distinct parts, Old Delhi and New Delhi. If someone wants to see the real old part of Delhi then he can visit Old Delhi and if you want to visit the growing and developed part of Delhi then visit New Delhi. Both parts of Delhi have their own significance.

Delhi offers numerous tourist places to visit like Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple, India Gate, Old Fort and many more. If you want to buy something unique from Delhi then you are most welcome to visit vibrant shopping complex of Connaught Place, Delhi Haat (famous for its handicraft goods and delicious food bonanza). There is one more place in Delhi famous for cheap and best items, known as Janpath and Palika Bazaar. There are some famous monuments made during the British era like India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Major Tourist Attractions in Delhi

Qutub Minar - Some people say that Qutub Minar is a tower of victory to signify the beginning of the Muslim rule in India. Some says that it is a minaret to the muezzins to call the faithful to prayers. But in the end one can say that it is really a finest monument of Mughal era. Qutub Minar was built by Qutub-uddin Aibak, the first Muslim ruler of Delhi in 1200 AD. He was the founder of Qutub Minar but his successor Iltutmush added three more storeys and in the end in the year 1368, Firoz Shah Tughlak constructed the fifth and the last storey. This is a 238 feet high with four projecting balconies.

Red Fort - Red Fort is one of the best Mughal architecture example in Delhi. This majestic fort is called Red Fort as it is built by red stones. This is the fort where British deposed the last Mughal ruler, Bahadur Shah Zafar and ended three century long Mughal rule. This fort was built by Shah Jahan when he shifted from Agra to Delhi. He laid the foundation of this majestic fort in the year 1618. This fort is just in front of Old Delhi. There are several attractions inside the fort in which Diwan-e-aam and Diwan-e-khas are most famous places. There is a most imposing feature in Diwan-e-aam and that is the throne of the emperor which is made of white marble. There are some more attractions in this fort known as the Rang Mahal (hall of colors), Moti Masjid (pearl mosque), Musamman Burg (Octagonal tower), Khwabgah (bedroom) and the Hammam (royal baths).


Jantar Mantar - Jantar Mantar also known as a gallery of modern art. This was built by Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the year 1699 to 1743. This observatory has some unique instruments known as Samrat Yantra, a simple equal hour sun dial, the Ram yantra for reading altitudinal angles, Jai Prakash for ascertaining the position of the sun and other celestial bodies, and the Misra Yantra which is a combination of four scientific gadgets.

India Gate - India Gate is one of the best designed monument built by Sir Edwin Lutyens in British era. This is a war memorial to commemorate 70,000 Inidan Soliders. The name of every martyr is carved on its wall. This structure was completed in the year 1931 and the height of India Gate is 160 feet with 138 feet arch. India Gate is built from sandstone. India Gate houses the Eternal Flame in memory of the Indian Soldiers who lost their life for their country in 1971 war against India.

Jama Masjid - This is the biggest mosque of India built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. This majestic mosque is just in front of Red Fort in Delhi. Foundation of Jama Masjid was done in the year 1650. More than 5,000 workers worked for the period of six years to complete the largest mosque in India. This mosque is also a fine example of mughal architecture. There are three main and huge gates of this mosque. The main courtyard of the mosque is 408 square feet and paved with red stone.

Old Delhi - Old Delhi, also known as the real Delhi is the oldest part of the capital. Old Delhi presents old world charm to its visitors. There are several narrow streets in old Delhi with big and small shops inside it. The main place in old Delhi is Chandni Chowk. Here in Chandni Chowk, one can enjoy buying some different things which are very difficult to find anywhere in other part of India.

Raj Ghat - Raj Ghat, one of the famous places of Delhi because here father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. This place is situated on the banks of River Yamuna. A black marble square platform is built on the cremation area. This was built after the assassination of Gandhi ji in 1948.

The Lotus Temple - Lotus Temple is also known by the name of Bahai Temple. The structure of this monument is similar like lotus that is why this is named Lotus Temple. Basically this is a temple where anyone can come for prayer and meditation. The construction of this temple was completed in the year 1986.

Old Fort - Old fort, as the name suggests is the oldest fort of Delhi. Although there are some ruins remaining of this fort but still it provides some best tourist spots to all types of tourists. The most attractive thing about this fort is that every evening a new light and sound show is held by the Department of Delhi Tourism.

Humayun's Tomb - Humayun's tomb in Delhi is one of the best complex of buildings of Mughal architecture. This is basically the tomb of great emperor, Humayun. This place is located near Nizamuddin railway station in New Delhi. The complex is also counts in the list of World Heritage Site. The most attractive part of this complex is that this is the first example of this type of Mughal architecture. Humayun Tomb was built by Hamida Banu, Humayun's widow. She started this tomb in 1562. This complex took 8 years to complete. The most beautiful place in this complex to visit is Chahr Bagh Garden. This garden is designed in Persian-style layout and was the first of its kind in the South Asia region.

Best Season :

Best season for sightseeing of Delhi is recommended between October to March. As the Summers in Delhi are very hot so it is better not to visit it during the months of May, June and July.

Delhi, the capital of India is also known as the shopper's paradise. Delhi offers several famous shopping places from where one can find cheap and best items which are difficult to find anywhere in all over the country. As Delhi is the capital of India, one can also find almost everything from all the parts of the country. Manufacturers come here and sell their products as the demand is very heavy due to the visitors from all round the world. Some of the famous shopping centers of Delhi are Connaught Place, South Extension, Chandni Chowk to Sarojini Nagar, Karol Bagh, Janpath and Lajpat Nagar.
