Trainwreck
is a high energy roots group that combines contemporary rock/pop
styles with traditional forms of music such as bluegrass, country,
rockn roll and blues. They are emerging as a potent live force
on the Toronto music scene and have been impressing club owners
and audiences alike with their big rhythmic wall of sound that
gets feet tapping, beer flowing and crowds up dancing.
Formed
by Maritimers Tim, John and Bob, the group began as an acoustic
project called The Brunswick Stags. Their sound developed playing
at numerous East Coast parties where they indulged their collective
love of all forms of roots and traditional music. With the addition
of Sean and Dino, the name changed to Trainwreck, a tongue in
cheek reference to the adrenalin-stoked nature of their live
performances, where the band often seems on the verge of derailing.
Tim and
John were the founders of Basic English who were signed
to Risque Disque/WEA in the late 80s. They released their debut
album Sweet Panic in 1990, produced by Terry Brown. Bob, who
has done a number of productions at Reaction Studios and Presence
Sound, was most recently a member of Local Heroes, winners
of the 1997 Mix 99 songwriting contest.
Sean
played bass with Basic English and also with Bob in other
projects. Dino has played with John in Toronto roots mainstays
The Wayward Angels as well as with the others in various
projects.
Trainwreck
has been busy building a following performing in various Toronto
bars including appearances at Clintons Renaissance Room, the
Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, Ted's Wrecking Yard and the Cameron
House, where they hosted their "3-Chord Hootenanny"
on Thursday nights as a way to try and foster a sense of community
amongst local musicians.
They
performed well-received showcase sets at NXNE 1999, 2000 and
2001. Their original tunes, along with their badass bluegrass
versions of classic covers guarantee a hot and sweaty night of
good time music. They celebrated the release of their debut CD
Big Smoke Saloon at Ted's Wrecking Yard on Saturday May 12,2001.
