Pharaoh Thutmose III observed fiery disks. (1)
This report is believed to be a modern hoax derived from the story of the Old Testament prophet Ezekiel (7)

Greek philosopher, logician and scientist Aristotle (a student of Plato and tutor to Alexander the Great) whose references to heavenly disks have been interpreted by some UFOlogist as an indication that he witnessed objects similar to modern UFOs.

Two shining silver shields dived repeatedly on Alexander's army, causing the elephants and horses to panic while they were attempting to cross the Jaxartes River into India. Alexander The Great.

During Alexander's siege of Tyre, a large flying shield, leadng a triangular formation of four smaller shields, circled over Tyre while thousands of soldiers on both sides watched in amazement. Suddenly, the largest UFO shot a beam of light at the city's walls...then took off at great speed disappearing into the distance. Alexander The Great.

Report by 'Andrea' an Italian secet service agent:

It was a metallic disc, polished and reflecting light, with a diameter of ten to twelve metres. Two fighter from a nearby base took off, but were unable to reach it....It didn't emit sound, which would lead one to consider an aerostat. But nobody knows balloons that can fly faster than wind. I know for sure that is was seen by the aviators... Then, after approximately at least an hour and after passing over, Mestre, it was seen as a sort of metallic tube, grey or slate.

A sketch by a confidential informant was redrawn by Andrea, who explained that:

[The main object] was described like a kind of aerial torpedom with very clear windows...and alternating white and red lights. [The two other objects] were two 'hats', hats like those used by priests: wide, round, with a dome in the centre, metallic and following the torpedo without changing their relative positions...

Daniel Leger saw a craft with a greyish aluminium hue, like two plates joined together, seperated by a middle section consisting of two rings with a black line between them. The craft was estimated to be about six meters in diameter and two meters in height. Several square portholes with rounded edges were spaced on the upper section. No insignia, seams, weldings or connections were apparent on the upper part, which seemed to be made in one piece. Female piltot, slightly slanted, Asian like eyes. Guttural speech.

British author Nick Redfern states, British Military records reveal that a fleet of flying discs -- called 'Foo Fighters' -- were launched from huge cigar-shaped Mothercraft during B-17 daylight raids over Germany in 1943. A Lancaster bomber crew of eight saw what they described as a huge disc-shaped object with a row of lights that dwarfed their aircraft many times over. Upon landing, the crew officially reported what they had seen and were told not to talk to anyone about it and not to record the information in their log books. In a time before the era of flying saucers and UFOs and at a time of war, this case stands as a landmark sighting.

Modern Era

"They seemed longer than wide. Their thickness was about 1/20 of their width."

"Mirror Bright"

Kenneth Arnold's famous sighting over Mount Rainer Washington, in 1947 started the Modern Era in UFOlogy. The publicity generated by the sighting encouraged hundreds of people to report their own UFO sightings and set the stage for widespread public interest, controversy and government involvement. Arnold's decription of ...like saucers skipping over the water led newspaper headline writers to coin the term "flying saucer." (7)

Kenneth Arnold. the Boise, Idaho, businessman who made the report, said the objects moved like saucers skipping across a pond, not that the were saucer-shaped. (11)

Bill Bequette, a Washington State newspaper reporter, invented the term flying saucers. He wrote, they reported flat, circular objects that look like flying saucers sound like they should look like. (11)

Arnold described what he saw as being "flat like a pie pan", "shaped like saucers and were so thin I could barely see them… ", "half-moon shaped, oval in front and convex in the rear. … they looked like a big flat disk" (see Arnold's drawing at right), and flew "like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water". (One of the objects, however, he would describe later as crescent-shaped, as shown in illustration at left.) (Wikipedia)

The southwestern portion of the United States is noted as a focal point for such alleged close encounters with UFOs. Reports of such encounters were especially numerous and well-publicized during the 1950s. (7)

CIA's Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90

In November 1954, CIA had entered into the world of high technology with its U-2 overhead reconnaissance project. Working with Lockheed's Advanced Development facility in Burbank, California, known as the Skunk Works, and Kelly Johnson, an eminent aeronautical engineer, the Agency by August 1955 was testing a high-altitude experimental aircraft--the U-2. It could fly at 60,000 feet; in the mid-1950s, most commercial airliners flew between 10,000 feet and 20,000 feet. Consequently, once the U-2 started test flights, commercial pilots and air traffic controllers began reporting a large increase in UFO sightings.

An eminent British scientist, R. V. Jones, headed a standing committee created in June 1951 on flying saucers. Jones' and his committee's conclusions on UFOs were similar to those of Agency officials: the sightings were not enemy aircraft but misrepresentations of natural phenomena. The British noted, however, that during a recent air show RAF pilots and senior military officials had observed a "perfect flying saucer." Given the press response, according to the officer, Jones was having a most difficult time trying to correct public opinion regarding UFOs. The public was convinced they were real.

Adding to the concern was a flying saucer sighting by US Senator Richard Russell and his party while traveling on a train in the USSR in October 1955. After extensive interviews of Russell and his group, however, CIA officials concluded that Russell's sighting did not support the theory that the Soviets had developed saucerlike or unconventional aircraft. Herbert Scoville, Jr., the Assistant Director of OSI, wrote that the objects observed probably were normal jet aircraft in a steep climb.

Flying to intercept a mysterious radar reflection, an unknown French Air Force pilot photographed this craft in March 1954 (1957?) over Rouen with his gun-sight camera. The UFO paced the plane for several minutes before speeding off past the maximum velocity of the French airplane. This UFO appears to be of the same type that appeared in McMinnville, Oregon over the farm of Mr. Paul Trent.

The Air Force had a plan to outfit a squadron of planes with gun cameras and the station them around the country with orders to scramble when there was a UFO sighting in the vicinity. A pilot assigned to participate in these intercepts claimed they were successful on a number of occasions, providing close-up views of UFOs (contrary to Edward J. Ruppelt of Project Blue Book claims that a plan to outfit a squadron of planes with gun cameras was never implemented because it was too expensive). The pilot had seen three domed discs in a tight formation outrunning the latest fighters, Gun camera film from a number of intercepts were made, but the pilots had no opportunity to see them and none of them knew what happened to the films after they were removed from the aircraft. Suddenly a multicoloured band began to rotate inside the windows and a witish mist thickened around the object, wich emitted a faint hum. The witnesses became aware of a sulphurous smell.

First saw the blue-green, metallic object. It was shaped like two disks "pressed inward toward each other." The rotating rim had what appeared to be windows illuminated by blue, green and fluorescent gray lights. The object was about 500 feet in diameter and made no sound, The UFO cavored about the sky. Sometimes it hovered, wobbling as it did so. The object shot up into the sky, then sped off at an abrupt ninety-degree angle,

At 2:00pm on a witness who declines identification snapped a color photograph of a shiny circular disc-shaped metallic flying object that had a high raised cupola on its top side. It was flying high above the trees, and above the lower scattered puffy white cloud level, but well below a higher cirrus layer of thin clouds. The brushed-silver disc had a smooth unbroken lower surface and a three-tiered dome. The lower part of the dome had a red-orange color, with a light yellow colored part above that which was topped by a reddish-gold knob at the uppermost level. No seams, joints, ports or projections of any kind marred the unbroken finish of the shiny craft.

Time not given. A 13-year-old boy working at a kennel in Williston, Florida heard a humming noise, and noticed that the dogs were attempting to hide in their pens and whining. As he went out to investigate the area turned red with illumination, and a bright red disc-shaped object hovered only 20 feet over his head. He felt heat coming from the object. When he returned to the dog pens, the dogs barked at him and would not let him inside. (Sources: Robert Gribble, International UFO Reporter, May 1984, p. 16; MUFON UFO Journal, May 1984, p. 11).

Photograph was taken on May 14, 2008. Photographer was taking snaps of storm clouds over Eastland County, Texas. She noticed nothing out of the ordinary in the skies as she took her photograph. However, when uploading the images to her computer, she noticed a photograph with some blurry objects, and as she continued, saw another photograph with a very clear capture of a disc-shaped object, which appeared just above a line of trees.

From witness illustration.

Witness was awaken early at 1:30 AM by pet dog barking at something out side the a bed room window. Witness looked out window and saw a disk about 80 feet away hovering over a close-by artificial pond. The object was approximately 30 feet above the pond approximately 80 feet from the witness home. The pond is approximately 230 by 45 feet. There are several fruit and small maple trees between the witness home and the pond. The disk was observed through and just above the trees as shown in the graphic. The disk was approximately 30 feet in diameter and 15 feet thick. The sighting lasted approximately 5 minutes until the object just disappeared. This sighting occurred between thunder storms on this evening with a storm previously passing through about two hours previously. The sky was broken clouds with between cloud lighting occurring. There was no wind during the sighting event. The lighting flashes in the sky lit up the disk when they occurred. Red rectangular lights on the bottom portion of the craft rotated from right to left and reflected off the pond surface. The bottom of craft appeared to be a metallic blue with a shimmer to it. Water in the pond below the craft appeared to ripple. The dome on the craft was unlit.
