Course Description

Web pages are used to publish information, advertise products, and provide services to millions of people each day. This course will focus equally on students having good communication skills as well as gaining the ability to produce Web sites using HTML, the programming language used to create Web pages.

This course will assist students in creating web pages using various resources that will develop their skills in planning, organizing, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. Students will learn about the history of the Internet and how the World Wide Web came to be. Throughout the course the principles of web design and development will be studied through discussions and evaluation of quality on the Web in terms of accessibility, form, and content. Hands-on exercises will be interspersed to orient students in using some popular applications such as Dreamweaver and Netscape Composer for creating web pages, Adobe for creating and editing graphics, WS_FTP for uploading files, Inspiration for planning and organizing, as well as converting Office 97/2000 files for Internet use.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course students will be able:

  1. Plan and organize the development of a website by using outlines, diagram and mapping techniques.

  2. Searching and evaluating the quality of Web sites in terms of content, format, and accessibility

  3. Apply the graphic design principles, e.g. composition and lay-out, text and graphics, in designing graphics and Web pages.

  4. Abide with pertinent acceptable use policies, copyright laws and fair use policies in the creation and publication of materials on the Web.

  5. Download, install, and use various authoring tools, utilities, and other applications:

    • Dreamweaver, Netscape Composer, FrontPage, and WordPad to create and edit HTML documents
    • Flash and Java Script to create interactive, dynamic pages
    • Windows Explorer and WS_FTP to search, retrieve, transfer, and manage files
    • Inspiration to plan and map the website structure
    • Winzip and similar file compression software

  6. Apply and evaluate free online Web developing tools available, like, tutorials, wizards, forms, search tools, quizzes, graphics, clip art, PDF converter, etc.

  7. Create, edit, scan, import graphic images using a variety of hardware and software tools as well as Internet resources, such as digital camera, scanner, Paint, Adobe Photo Deluxe, Clipart, etc.
