Missionary work began in Tennessee during the fall of 1834. One of the first missionaries
to labor in Tennessee was Wilford Woodruff, who later became the fourth president of the
Church. Tennessee was originally part of the Southern States Mission. Changes and division
have resulted in 3 of the 4 major cities in Tennessee being part of separate missions.
Tennessee has 2 missions, the Knoxville Mission, which includes Chattanooga, and the
Nashville Mission. Memphis is in the Arkansas, Little Rock Mission. In July 1975 the
Tennessee Nashville Mission was organized with Emerson T. Cannon as president. The T.N.M.
consists of 5 stakes; Franklin, Hopkinsville, Paducah, McMinnville, and Nashville (See
Mission Map for current boundaries ). Approximately 14,000 member of the church live in
the mission boundaries amongst a total population of 2.5 million.
