Wes Bentley

Bentley, twenty-one, burned through the screen last month as the drug dealer/love interest in Sam Mendes's American Beauty; next up is the indie flick White River Kid, in which he plays the serial killer of the title, a boy who lives by a river like an animal and murders anyone who tries to bring him back to civilization. As to why a nice, Juilliard-trained son of two United Methodist preachers from Little Rock, Arkansas (yes, he voted for Bill), keepsgetting cast as dangerous, delinquent men - well, the knife-edge stare and glowering brows might be partly to blame, but Bentley has another idea: "I think it's my calmness," he says, "I don't judge the characters; I don't stereotype them they way one often does with people you meet." His interest in Taoism, sparked three years ago by The Tao of Pooh (he admits it), probably has something to do with this noted serenity as well as his affinity for stories that are about "coming-of-being - identifying and abandoning the masks we wear."
