A hakubutsukan is a Japanese museum...but it isn't that easy!
So is a bijutsukan (museum of art),
a shiryokan (repository/archive - there are two kinds...),
a homotsukan (treasure hall),
and....I'll tell you the rest later; there are more than 30 of them!....

Anyway, although someone may say "museum" in English when discussing one of these institutions, there is more to it in Japanese than that. There are public and private museums, museums associated with just about every kind of thing you can imagine, religious treasure houses, and other kinds of institutions that sometimes get translated to "museum" with no further explanation...and so we miss out on a lot of the basic information.
There is also a big problem with saying "curator"...but as I do hope to publish my research in the real world, maybe you'll have to wait a little while for that one.
