Barcelona, Spain: (12 pictures) – Days 11 and 12
Colombus Monument - This monument supposedly marks the point
where Columbus was welcomed home to Spain by Ferdinand and Isabel after
his first trip to America.
The Cathedral - This is right in the middle of Barcelona's Gothic
neighborhood, and the center of old Roman Barcelona. The cathedral
itself was started over 700 years ago and there are a bunch of old Roman
walls surrounding it.
Sagrada Familia - This is the most interesting church
I encountered on my whole trip. It was originally started by Antonio
Gaudi, who was responsible for designing many different and very interesting
buildings all over Barcelona. Gaudi is buried here, and it is still
under construction today and won't be finished for another twenty years.
Sagrada Familia - This is just another angle of the very
interesting church. There is controversy over it now because the
construction has been taken over by a new architect and his style isn't
the same as Gaudi's original style. You can see the newest part of
the church on the left side.
Barcelona Harbor - This picture was taken from the end of a
long pier used for cruise ships that I walked down. You can see the
Columbus monument on the left hand side of the picture.
Barcelona from the castle on Montjuic - I walked all the
way up to the top of this mountain where there was a small castle that
didn't really look too much like a castle, but was still cool to go to
mostly because of this view of the city.
Olympic Stadium - I passed the Olympic Stadium on the
way down from the mountain and castle. There was a European League
football game being played inside the stadium at the time.
National Palace - This isn't really the same kind of palace
as in most of the other European cities. This one just had a museum
in it that I didn't go to. Also later at night it had a great fountain
show as can be seen below.
Fountain Light Show at National Palace - Every night Barcelona
has a really good water, light, and music show at the National Palace.
I really enjoyed it and I thought it was even better than the fountain
show at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Tiffany at the Fountain Show - This is my friend Tiffany who
I hung out with most of my first day in Barcelona. We met on the
night train coming to Barcelona from Madrid and we stayed at the same hostel.
Las Rablas - This is the main pedestrian street in Barcelona
that leads all the way to the harbor. Most of the bars, restaurants,
and everything else including my hostel was located on this street.
It's similar to Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade because of all the
booths and street performers.
Beach near Olympic Village - I went to this crowded beach
and walked around for a while on my last day in Spain. I didn't go
in the water, but I saw (inadvertently of course) plenty of topless women
sunbathing and just walking around.
