Kabuki meets Western theatre as La Luna Productions announces the UK premiere of SAKURA - THE BANDIT PRINCESS, written in English by contemporary Japanese playwright, KIKUE TASHIRO. This one-woman show, starring KATI KURODA, brings an epic adventure of11th century Kyoto to 21st century Edinburgh.

SAKURA is the exotic tale of a country girl’s odyssey from young innocent to powerful princess. Ms. Kuroda piays the title role and all the characters - male and female - in a performance that transcends gender and class lines. Directed by five-time EMMY nominee, PENNY BERGMAN, SAKURA features a fusion of Japanese and Western theatre techniques, spanning the culture gap with entertainment anyone can enjoy. ALAN NYOSHIN STEIR provides live musical accompaniment on traditional Japanese instruments.

SAKURA premiered at the Circle Repertory Company in New York, then toured the U.S.A. to widespread acclaim. Critics hailed the play as "an incredible production and a brilliant performance" (Honolulu Star-Bulletin), "an amazing array of characters -- extraordinary” (Dallas Morning News), "a virtuoso turn” (New York’s Village Voice), and "an acting tour-de force ... one-woman triumph" (Honolulu Advertiser).

LEGENDS OF THE BANDIT PRINCESS is project sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts.
