Work in the UK

The recent change of law makes it possible for most international students to work part-time (up to 20 hours during term time and 40 hours during holidays), provided that you do not work too many hours which may affect your study.?As for full-time employment, you still require work permit, which can be applied for by your prospective employer on your behalf.

What sort of jobs you would take really depend on your own strengths and preferences together with job availabilities. One possibilities is to fill in the local labour demand for odd-hour workers, such as those required in factories, farms and other organisations. With the recent law of minimum wages and general care for working environments, these jobs are in a way suitable to fill in the gaps of your study, as they are often in the evenings or over the weekends. These can be found in local press, job centres and agencies.

Another possibility is to utilise your Chinese background. This could involve working in Chinese restaurants or shops or other business entities. It is also possible to work as freelance Chinese lanaguage teachers or interpreters or translators. You need to apply directly by yourself for these jobs. If you are studying for computer or engineering degrees, it is possible for you to utilise your special expertise.

You can of course participate in voluntary actions or activities. This may provide you with good opportunities for learning through practical experience and enhance your CV. Participation in local MPs' campaigns could give you an insight into the British system of democracy. There are obviously many other possibilities, all depending on your particular circumstances.

While on the internet, it is also possible to get free shares or earn commissions or do free lotteries, but don't expect too much from any free stuff. Nothing is free in life, isn't it?

Apart from making some pocket money, it is important to remember to polish your CV with practical experiences and improve your grasp of knowledge through real applications.

At the end of your study, you will often be asked to demonstrate your academic and practical learning through your final thesis or dissertation. Then, again, there is always the future after graduation to bear in mind. Money is important, but a sustainable development of yourself is more important!!!

We list a number of useful links.(Please let us know which sites are particularly useful to you so that we can add or specify the most popular sites and delete the useless ones!).

It is always beneficial to start with examining your CV so that you can identify your own strengths and weaknesses. Then, it is time to look around for suitable jobs. Your friends who have been here before you can often point you to the opportunities in the local areas. Places where you go can often be the first places for you to find your first jobs.

If you choose to work, remember that you are also representing the Chinese people, which means that you are supposed to be hard-working and well-displined with minimum baggages. If working is a new experience to you, make sure that you are at least mentally prepared for the hardship. Remember, learning new skills is often not an easy or pain-free process. Good luck!
