Arthur Kaplan is a native North Carolinian.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the New York Medical College,
he served in the Navy as a medical officer during the Korean War.
He retired in 1993 after practicing Internal Medicine in Norfolk, Va. for 40 years.

As an orchid hobbyist, his experience spans nearly thirty years,
and has evolved into an interest primarily in species.
His collection of approximately 3,000 orchids contains many rare & unique plants,
associated with many interesting stories, which he will share in his lecture.
He has received many AOS awards, and has written several articles for the AOS Bulletin.

Over the years, he has photographed virtually every species he has ever bloomed.
His photograph of Encyclia citrina appeared on the front cover
of the AOS Bulletin, June 1995,
with an accompanying article, Encyclia mariae and Encyclia citrina.

The AOS video, "Growing Under Lights," included a setup in his home for growing orchids
under flourescent lights in a 2nd floor, south-facing, carpeted room,
(previously a bedroom) where he watered them with a garden hose,
while his tolerant wife stood by !

Arthur was the President of the 35th EOC in Virginia Beach, Va.
