Dok-kaeo
;
the phikul
flower motif,
named after the blossom of the tree Mimusops
elegi , is an ancient
design woven on
the fabric of the Thai peoples in nearly
all regions. [ The phikul flower is simply
" Dok-kaeo
"
]
The phikul is one of the round floral motifs
in Thai decorative art. Flowers having four
petals are called
" Dok-jan " ,
but those with six or eight small petals
called "
Phikul " ,
there may be more than six or eight petals
.
The
name of the pikul motif various in a confusing
way from place to place as the designin
such an ancient one. As already mentioned
, in the North and Northeast , it known
as
Dok
kaeo .
However, in some place ,
the
maeng ngot
[
scorpion ] motif is called phikul
. What is
more , in some places , there are pieces
of Silk Phum
Riang [
Nakhon Sithammarat ] cloth
bearing designs called phikul-lom
and dok-
kaeo-lom ,
each of which is distinct from the other
, the former having ten petals : the latter
, four. Among the Thai-Laos , Khid Dok-kaeo
is so called
ta-leo [
or , in standard Thai , cha-leo , which
is a star-like symbol used as a boundary
marker ] , while among the White Thai
, it is called "
Dok-ben
" or
"
Dok-wen "
or sunflower. Confusing
as it might be , this variation is further
evidence of the great age of the phikul
motif in Thai woven fabric.
Beginning in June ,
B.E.2525
, the villagers recieved
significant encouragement
from Their Majesties the
King Bhumibol and Queen
Sirikit of Thailand when
they came to stay at the
Royal " Phupan
"
Palace in Sakol Nakhon
Province for their annual
visit. Her Majesty the
Queen has rendered special
interest to the
khid-patterned fabrics
which they have been presented
to her. She thereby recommended
the new
patterns such as khid
with som-det
, kam-poo
, kab-shaba
, phikul
, century
designs. If you are interested.

She
has also suggested that silk
thread be used instead of
cotton. Hence the villagers
were able to delvelop new
khid patterns , used of
proper dyes and new weaving
skills. The finished silk
goods are both for sale and
annual prize
competition when the loyal
couple came to reside at the
royal palace.
