What's it all about?

Carmageddon Series is a Non-Racing Competition Game, produced by Stainless Software & Scale Interactive. The point of this game is in fact, survival. The only thing in the game that's left from the racing genre - is a car. Anything else is not essential and may vary depending on your preferrance. Just imagine yourself a full freedom, given to you and your own automobile... Okay, straight to business.

The road.

First of all, there is a track. Usually, it is a part of the city or of a wilderness area, sometimes, it's a snow valley, or a little Irish village...Some chemical refinery variations are possible...On the terrain, couple of hundreds of pedestrians are scattered in random order. Those include little annoying old ladies telling you stories about good ol' times, cheerful tourists, happy skiers, visitors, teenage girls with backpacks, sportsmen, or just fans, willing to see the show or even die under the wheels of some crazy racer. Well... we'll give 'em that joy. The map is a pure 3D environment and there is no annoying track, from which you cannot drive off. There are no disturbing arrows showing the right direction. There are no writings like: WRONG WAY or HURRY! You are free to do whatever you want.(not mentioning that you are free to turn around and go back, in fact, that's what everybody does) Every direction is right (or should I say - "wrong"?) You can travel wherever your car is able to get you (and believe me, the structure and the capabilities of a particular car do really mean a lot in this game!) And the temptations to get off the road are numerous and very desirable (along with huge crowds of citizens, there are many bonuses, that give extra time, money, or let your car temporarily have additional and interesting physical abilities. Only a retard, after seeing a GO sign, would rush to the checkpoint ahead and go on driving around, completing the laps one after one like a mad dragonfly...A normal person (not spoiled by freaking NFS habits) is a hunter, a strategist, a thinker. He does the same thing everybody does - dumps the laps thing and starts the real playing.

Task

The only thing limiting you is time, that is merciless and runs very quickly. The point of the game is not to come first or get to the checkpoints, but to gain this time to stay on the track long enough to win. Along with time, there is money. Cash plays a very significant role in the game. For money, you can upgrade you vehicle, buy new parts, (which affect offense, defense, and speed), or even get new cars from the dead opponents. How do you get all that? Well, think...Why do we have pedestrians on the road? Time, money, points, pride... There are certain extra bonus points given for impressing acrobatic stunts. Oh yes, Carmageddon is also a game of beauty, it can actually be called an auto-acrobatic-driving-championship among the mental hospital runaway patients. Stunts mean a lot. Carmageddon is more than your average racing game. It's the only racing game where you earn points for speed, racing style and - most importantly - PEDESTRIANS! Smashed somebody in a beautiful way? - get some extra cash. Committed a mass murder? - get some cash. Showed some artistic impression? - get a bonus from the judges! Well, I am not a big fan of easy profit, but excuse me, performing a triple back flip with 360 turn-around in the air and a perfect 4-wheel landing on a speed of 190 miles per hour...That's impressive.
"Eto, prostite, kruto!"(russian)

Flying is the normal method of traveling in the game. In fact, you'll have to take off the ground sometimes, because certain places can't be reached that easily. And the harder the place is to get to - the more chance there is a useful bonus there. There are also harmful, bad bonuses, but that's less often. The map is huge, so you might feel kinda lost, where to go? What to do? Where are the bad guys?!! Don't panic, calm down, see what other computer players are doing (they're very smart - AI deserves respect), watch and learn, study the map, stay cool. There are three ways to finish the race:
1.The boring one - Go through all the checkpoints several times.
2.The standard one - Waste all the opponents.
3.The hard one - Kill all pedestrians on the map.

Opponents

Well, we have a wonderful world - a map full of people, birds are singing, flowers are growing...well As people say, there is no space for two bears in one lair. Well, here we have all six! You know what to do to them, don't you? Your opponents may be real people, if you're playing online, or CPU characters. Computer opponents are a masterpiece to tell a whole different story about. The Developers deserve to have a gold statue of themselves for creating the AI that could claim to be Intelligent. Nobody is driving around in circles, you won't see the cars coming out of nowhere and dissapearing after going around the corner. Every player in the game has his own problems to solve and own things to do. Every character can be tracked on the map an has a logic patterns in his actions.

Freedom

Carmageddon is freedom. Freedom of thought, freedom of choice. A choise between game types, a choice of cars, a choice of style. Here, unlike in many, many other good games, you are free to REALLY make up your own, very unique driving style and image. Note, that the physics aspect is very well worked out in this unbelievable simulator. That's why the game actually can be called so - a car simulator. Carmageddon is not a racing game it's more of a cobmination of action game and a strategic simulator, mixed with seas of blood and rivers of immoral violence. Although there is no place in the game, where you can't get, you have to consider your car's abilities and technical characteristics. A tank is a tank, a tractor is a tractor, and a formula one car is a formula one car. A tow truck will erase anything on its way, but is very clumsy and kinda slow. Tiny hot-rod rattletraps can take you in the smallest tightest holes but also die pretty rapidly. Choose yourself - all kinds of transportation that range from extra light to superheavy. Freedom of organizing the race. The game's level system is designed so that you freely can run on the same track as many times as you want, or you can ingnore a particular track at all if you don't like it. As long as you win on one track, more complicated levels become available to you. The easier, primitive levels,at the same time, become unavailable. The game supports multiplayer and has some additional track maps for this mode.
