Blog? What's a blog?
Simply put, "blog" is short for weblog.  "Ok", you say, "what's a
weblog?" Well, a weblog is a journal, a diary, a one page (usually) website.
Some of the most common elements found on a weblog are: The users
name, his entries (and an archive of entries), and a place where readers can
leave comments about the author's entries.
Additional elements may include the author's picture or icon, a tag
board, guestbook, email address and some other Java and HTML  goodies.
Some blogsites are free of charge, and some are not.  Some sites allow
HTML additions, and some do not.  However, most of the pay sites do have
the most options.  There are ways in most  cases, however, for the user to
make
some modifications to the blog in order to make it truly unique,
whether it's a paid blog or a free one.
There can be some advantages to having a paid blog.  Usually it means
that you have the most latitude with customization, and you can operate and
display your blog without any pesky advertisements, either banners or those
dreaded pop-ups.
But take heart. There are many blogsites with a minimum of advertising
that are completely free.  It's those sites that I am concentrating on.

The following URL's will take you to sites offering free blogs.

TexasHarley's Place

This is one of my favorite sites. I have met several good
people here, and have engaged in some interesting
discussions.

At this site you can actually load your own template.
Lots of customization is possible.

These two sites are very similar, and may even be
owned by the same people. Good sites, some
customization. Dependable.

This site is owned and operated by a very precocious
young man. A good, basic site. Great place to get your
feet wet.
