For the car’s suspension, my father and I decided to go were most have probably have not.  We just about removed all of the factory hardware from front to rear.  I will start out with my discrition at the front suspension and then the rear suspension.

The factory K-member, struts, springs, anti-roll bar were all tossed in favor of Griggs Racings GR-40 front suspension.  The kit includes a redesigned tubular K-member and tubular control arms.  To complement the system, a set of Koni - yellow struts and 300 lb springs are used.

The benefits of the system are revised suspension geometry, weight savings and adjustability.  In addition to the GR-40 system, I have added a Ford Motorsport anti-roll bar, Maximum Motorsports adjustable camber/caster plates and Bear Racings bump steer kit.

At the rear, the solid axle has been tossed if favor of a custom independent suspension.  I purchased a complete rear sub-frame w/suspension from a junked 89 Thunderbird Super Coupe.  My dad modified/re-engineered the sub-frame to work within the confines of the 86 Turbo Coupes frame.  To save some weight, I picked up a set of aluminum Lincoln Mark VIII rear control arms.  The picture at the right shows the original 89 Super Coupe control arms and a temporary exhaust installed in my 86 Turbo Coupe. suspension.jpg (48556 bytes)

One of the issues that we had to address was the wheel bolt pattern. My 86 Turbo Coupe used a 4 on 4.25” bolt pattern up front and the Super Coupe IRS had a 5 on 4.5” bolt pattern.  To solve this issue, I contacted Baer Racing and had a set of custom Front Track brakes made.  The brakes included 13” x 1.1” cross-drilled rotors, PBR calipers w/carbon metallic 90 street/track pads, 87-93 Mustang spindles and a master cylinder.  The stock disk brakes on the rear remain.
