DC Kate Spears.
A Gorgeous, Youthful, Feminine, Pretty, Confident,
Passionate and Capable member of the Sun Hill CID team.
After the corruption in CID in 2000, this 25 year old
was brought in along with a new batch of officers to
freshen up the likes of sun hill. Introducing Katherine
Spears, drafted in from West London, with only a couple
of years experience in the job. She soon made her mark
in the CID team, or perhaps on DC Mickey Webb. Joining
the team (On The Hook Prt1), she soon befriended Webb
and after some welcome drinks, they finally bedded.
Although the relationship between the two never took off
the ground, the two remained a close friendship and were
like two pees in a pod when it came to effectively
working together on cases.
Spears first main episode (Behind Enemy Lines) had her
stuck in the middle of an armed robbery at a bank.
Spears showed that she was capable of calmly handling
the situation until finally the ordeal was over. Of
course her looks and style will get in the way
sometimes, and usually generating unwelcome assumptions
but Kate Spears is no airhead. Although she’s a party
girl who enjoys going clubbing and having a drink down
the pub after a hard days work, she is much more than
her exterior shows. A bad up bringing with a violent
family background, which proves that there is much
grittiness behind her gorgeous smile. And often her past
experiences prove her passion about taking on domestics.
Her greatest challenge came when she was trying to prove
her worth to the officers at Sun Hill. Known around the
station for being a bit of a tart, and the assumptions
that this is how she had managed to get so far in her
career so fast. Kate became an outsider to the other
officers at Sun Hill. Then a weekend away proved to be
her worst nightmare, as a fellow DS from another station
pursued and attempted to rape her. What un-folded next
was a one women determination to catch a rapist and to
prove that this bent copper DS Cork was the perpetrator.
Feeling like she couldn’t trust anyone else on the
relief, and with the return of former The Bill officer,
Liz Rawton to investigate a number of rapes, Kate
pursued her own line of enquires that in the end led to
a dangerous discovery and situation of danger as Kate
and Liz were held hostage by the rapist. In the final
moments while Kate was driving the car at knifepoint,
she finally snapped and bringing the car to a dangerous
speed before slamming on the breaks, sending the rapist
flying through the car windshield.
Kate’s darkest hour started when she began an affair
with the Super, Tom Chandler. Keeping the relationship
discreet they were involved all the way up until the Sun
Hill fire. Chandler even bedding Kate Spears while
Inspector Derek Conway burnt to death in his patrol car
after a patrol bomb was thrown in – thus would have
been the end of Chandler if he had of gone like he was
originally supposed to. But as much as Kate deserved
better, and through Chandler’s eyes, Kate was just his
play toy, Kate finally fed up with the Supers charm,
threatened to expose their relationship and destroy his
career. And with the only last credit given to the
character of Kate Spears, she kneed Chandler in the
privates leaving him in agony on the floor.
Unfortunately DC Kate Spears was killed in the explosion
at Sun Hill in episode 008.
Although initially surviving the blast at Sun hill, she
later died in hospital around friends and family. As
news of Kate’s passing hit the station, it was Mickey
Webb who took the news hard, realising that he had loved
her. On the other side of the station, Chandler didn’t
even show any remorse or even bat an eyelid at the news
of her death. Showing little respect for Kate as he did
DS Debbie McAllister in a cubical during Kate Spears
funeral. Mickey Webb distraught went on a personal quest
to bring down Chandler and take revenge for Kate Spears
death.
