The Sandman is the comedic character of Stephen Abott. He was born out of the Newcastle comedy group, The Castanet Club, of which Mikey Robins and Glenn Butcher were members, among others.

During the 80s he cruised the standup scene, with his self-depreciating personality, and monotonous monologues. He often did shows alongside Paul Livingston's comedic persona, Flacco.

In the 1990s he became a regular star on Triple J, finally quitting the station in 2000, after the end of his radio serial "204 Bell Street".

In his time, he has release several books and made his first regular television appearance on Good News Weekend in 1998. He followed GNW to Channel Ten in 1999, where he worked on Good News Weeknight Lite, the revamped GNW in 2000 and several GNW specials in 2001.
