"Reality series "Survivor" host Jeff Probst has more than the tribe speaking these days. Jeff was named to the "Ten Directors To Watch" list put out by the American Cinematheque recently.
The host-turned-writer-director earned recognition following his independent project, a thriller titled "Finder's Fee." The movie was screened on Tuesday and also awarded the Golden Space Needle Award for best film and best director at the Seattle International Film Festival.
His movie gets the talents of actors James Earl Jones, Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) and Erik Palladino (ER and U-571).
From the rave reviews, it appears Jeff's torch will be burning for a long time."
"I was driving down the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles and I heard this crazy British guy, Mark Burnett, carrying on about this show called "Survivor." And he didn't give a lot of details but it sounded exoctic, it sounded far away and it sounded absolutely like the most unique thing I'd ever heard. And literally from the moment I heard him talking about it, I started investigating and it became my goal to get a meeting with Mark Burnett. If they needed a host, I wanted him to see me for that job.
"So I met with Mark Burnett and he spent the first hour and forty-five minutes of a two hour meeting, and that's no exaggeration, convincing me why I didn't want to do this. He said, 'I've been in the special services in the British army, this is WORSE than that! You'll have rats crawling on your face, leeches up to your armpits, there'll be no hotels, you can't handle it, you don't want it...' I felt like Jack Nickolson, you know? And I spent the last fifteen minutes convincing him that I was the only guy for it."
: Being the host of SURVIVOR doesn't mean you're immune to danger. So far, Jeff has been injured with every show. Here's the scoop:
"Three weeks into the third, African-set edition of CBS' ''Survivor,'' the natives are getting restless. On day 21, ''Survivor'''s host Jeff Probst faced off against an opponent with more venom than outback Überbitch (and current Playboy cover girl) Jerri Manthey. ''I got stung by a scorpion,'' Probst confesses to Entertainment Weekly via e-mail. ''Fortunately, the bite was a bit lower on the body. He crawled right up my boot and planted one on my Achilles' heel. He was about an inch and a half long and stung like a (expletive deleted). '' Call him a masochist, but the ever-earnest Probst (who will return to prime time when ''Survivor 3'' debuts in October) admits that he kinda likes the pain. '''Survivor 1,' I was stung in the nether regions by a jellyfish. During 'Survivor 2,' I peed on an electric fence and it sent a shock back to the point of origin. Now I feel authentic.''
