Stax Records and their Artists
Stax Recording Studios produced such great artists as ....Booker T and the MG's , Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave etc.
Stax Records was founded by Jim Stewert in 1958. Jim, along with his sister(Estelle Axton) ran their studio out of Memphis Tennessee.
The name Stax came from the first two letters of Stewerts and Axtons last names. Stax Records was based out of the old Capital
Theater on 926 East McLemore. The house band at Stax was actually Booker "T" and the MG's, The band members were Booker Jones,
Donald "Duck" Dunn, Al Jackson and Steve Cropper.
I would say the person career that really took off was Steve Cropper.
Cropper became a producer/song writer, and wrote such great hits as "In The Midnight Hour and 634-5789 for Wilson Pickett,
Knock On Wood for Eddy Floyd, and Mr. Pitiful, Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song) and Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay for Otis Redding.
As A producer his credits are as follows...
Redding, Pickett, Floyd, John Mellencamp, Jeff Beck, Jose Feliciano, John Prine, Poco, Tower Of Power, Robben Ford, and Joe Louis Walker.
On Jan 15, 1992 Cropper was Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
