Radish: Restraining Bolt
If you haven't heard of 'Radish' yet, you're behind the times. They have been labelled the 'American silverchair', yet age in 'Radish' is rather broader than that of the chair, ranging from 15-27yrs. So what's the hype about? Well the band seem to be writing and composing stuff that is just right for the time, as well as putting on a great live a show with it. 'Restraining Bolt' is a great, catchy album, although in sections a little lyricaly naive. Hopefully; like silverchair, 'Radish' will be allowed to mature to their full potential. *Also..ranging on a scale from 1-5, they gave Radish a 4 ½.*

"Fresh out of the gardens of Greeville, TX comes Radish-the latest and possibly hottest new group on the alternative-rock scene. The band is fronted by lead-singer, Ben Kweller who just turned sweet 16 on June 16! The blond 'n shaggy-haired Ben has been deeply involved in music - including song-writing and playing the guitar and piano, since he was five years old. He hooked up with drummer John Kent and Bassist Bryan Blur, and for three years the group's been getting geared up for their debut album, Restraining Bolt. Ben, who inherited his love of music for his musical dad, hopes that the band's intense tunes-which deal with subjects like racism and intolerance as well as love and good times-will appeal to fans of all ages. "I can't help it that I started writing songs when I was really young," says Ben. "But hopefully the age thing won't be a big deal because people will just listen to the music." With melodic singles like "Little Pink Sta rs" and "The You In Me," there's no doubt lots of people are goi ng to be tuning in!

RADISH: MAKING MUSIC THAT MATTERS
Not many 15-year-olds can boast having done lunch with Madonna, jamming with Tom Petty in a Malibu living room or shatting on the plane with Courtney Love. Then again, Ben Kweller, leader of hot rock act, Radish is not your average 15-year-old. Kweller and his Greenville, Texas based trio, which consists of John Kent, 17, on drums, and bassist Bryan Blur, the old man of the band at 29, have been making waves ever since being signed last year to Mercury Records, following a heated bidding war with various other labels. Since the release of the group's debut disc Restraining Bolt, otherwise jaded critics have been at a loss for words to describe the band's musical merits, comparing them to everyone from Nirvana to Pearl Jam. But blond, baby-faced Kweller remains maturely nonchalant about all the fame and opportunity. "I just hope I don't get eaten alive because of my age," he says. "I can't help it that I started writing songs when I was really young. I just want to grow and be a musician. Hopefully my age won't be a big deal because people will just listen to the music." Despite his tender age, Kweller is a long time veteran of the music world. His foray into fame and glory began when he was five and started studying the piano. He was already writing songs by the age of seven and eventually mastered the guitar- the instrument he plays in Radish- and drums, and had a whopping ten songs written by the time he was nine. "I just love what I'm doing," sums up Ben about his music career. " I wouldn't want to do anything else. I waited a long time to do this."
